OK, so they're not rock stars. But 5 scientists with the British Antarctic Survey will guarantee Al Gore's promise that the Live Earth concerts on July 7 will be performed on all 7 continents.

They'll be peforming during the dead of winter at the Rothera Research Station. In fact, it'll be the first time anyone outside the station has heard the indie rock-folk band, Nunatak, play at all. (Nunatak, by the way, is a Greenlandic work that means an exposed summit of a ridge mountain or peak within an ice field or glacier.)

The band's live audience won't be very big, either. Just the 17 colleagues who are manning the station during the harsh Southern Hemisphere winter.

"I can’t believe we’ve been invited to do this — it’s a fantastic opportunity to encourage people of the world to deal with climate change," lead singer Matt Balmer, a 22-year-old electronics engineer, said in a statement released by the BAS.

Other members include a marine biologist (Ali Massey), a meteorologist (Rob Webster), a communications engineer (Tris Thorne) and a polar guide (Roger Stilwell)

"We expected to spend our Antarctic winter here at Rothera quietly getting on with our work and maybe performing at the occasional Saturday night party," Balmer added. "We could never have imagined taking part in a global concert."

I am very pleased with this! I was wondering how they were going to do this and was actually hoping they wouldn't go the route they were thinking of going, simply because of the fragility of the region. This is the absolute PERFECT touch to have scientitsts who live there and are familiar with this crisis first hand playing to the world.

THANK YOU Mr. Gore and all involved with Live Earth for putting so much of your heart into this. It is clear to me that Mr. Gore has found his life's calling and that this call to arms for our planet will be what he will be remembered for. Let this be the beginning of a transition for our planet from inaction to the awakening we all must have to save this our only home.

A companion book to this summer's Live Earth concerts will come out June 26, printed, of course, on environmentally responsible paper.

The Live Earth Global Warming Survival Handbook: 77 Essential Skills to Stop Climate Change — or Live Through It, is a 160-page paperback release with an announced first printing of 200,000. It was written by David De Rothschild, founder of Sculpt the Future, a non-profit environmental foundation, and includes a foreword by actor-director Rob Reiner.

"This innovative and practical handbook supports the crucial mission and message of the Live Earth concerts and aims to inspire each of us to play a role, to do our share, in confronting and attempting to solve the climate crisis," Steven Pleshette Murphy, president and CEO of publisher Rodale Books, said in a statement Wednesday.

Proceeds from the $14.95 (U.S.) book will be given to the Alliance for Climate Protection, founded by former Vice President Al Gore, a co-chair of the July 7 Live Earth shows that will feature Madonna, the Police and many others performing in venues around the world.

"Live Earth will help us reach a tipping point that's needed to move corporations and governments to take decisive action to solve the climate crisis," Gore said in a statement issued by Rodale, which published Gore's companion book to his Academy Award-winning documentary on global warming, An Inconvenient Truth.

~~~~~~~~~
I am looking forward to attending the Live Earth concert here because to me it is an historic event regardless of what the critics say, and a chance to jump start the world into action and caring about substance over hype without political predisposition and hopefully, distraction. All I see in the corporate media now regarding Al Gore however is, Will Al Gore Run? They never talk about the Alliance for Climate Protection, The Climate Project, or all of the dedicated people around the world doing these slide shows for Mr. Gore and this planet, nor do they truly attempt to delve deeper into who he is and why he is doing this, or the moral imperative of this crisis unless a political spin can be put on it.
That's why I basically stay away from the corporate media in this country, because hype, gossip, and speculation is all they are about which is exactly what Mr. Gore writes about in The Assault On Reason. I then see the Live Earth concerts as a way for the people to regain the reason he talks about that has been lost in this country through propaganda, hype, misinformation, and insignifcant distractions, to once again see the big picture and hopefully really pull together to solve this crisis out of a sense of moral duty by finding the solutions within themselves.
This will surely be another book to add to my collection and share with my child. I just hope that the media one day can get beyond their esoteric gossiping and truly get down to educating the people regarding the reality of the situation we now face globally due to this crisis before it is indeed too late. It is however, good to know that so many others share the passion and education that is needed to solve this crisis regardless of political hype. I believe this book and these concerts will be a great start to that end.
6. Where did you hear that?
I was just talking to someone yesterday about hoping they would sign on to do this. The link to the Live Earth site is in the op. Hopefully if this is true it will be updated. I would guess if true, London?
