Leahy: Missing White House Emails Found, But Still Witheld From Congress

In an impassioned speech, (April 2007)Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) said at the time that the White House was lying and the emails could be recovered:

“They say they have not been preserved. I don’t believe that!” Leahy shouted from the Senate floor. “You can’t erase e-mails, not today. They’ve gone through too many servers. Those e-mails are there, they just don’t want to produce them. We’ll subpoena them if necessary.”

“Like the famous 18-minute gap in the Nixon White House tapes, it appears likely that key documentation has been erased or misplaced. This sounds like the Administration’s version of ‘the dog ate my homework.’”

.............

Today, during a Senate Judiciary Committee meeting, Leahy revealed that the White House does indeed have the emails, but has yet to turn them over to Congress:

To their credit, the White House has now told me they — well, yes indeed, I was right; they were wrong. The e-mails are found. They were there in a backup system, although they have yet to give them.

3. just to clarify, since i was initially confused:
most of the above statements made by Leahy were in APRIL. The bottom stuff is new...

5. How convenient
for GOP blowhards to claim "nothing was found" when they withhold the evidence and Bush administration officials lie under oath.

33. He also spoke on the Senate Floor, placing comments in the Congressional Record
and Specter had to follow with a Bushco defense, of course.

7. How 'bout asking that spineless Pelosi to start impeachment proceedings?
The Constitution gives Congress oversight power. If the pResident doesn't oblige, that's like the pResident treating the Constitution like a "G D piece of paper." I think distorting the Constitution is a high crime and misdemeanor itself, to go along with the other high crimes and misdemeanors already committed.

Do not return either Pelosi or Reid to their respective offices. Turn them out.

As the first female Speaker of the House, she doesn't want her legacy to be a failed impeachment.

10. Then Nancy Is Far Too Nice-Minded to Be Speaker
Henry Clay, Sam Rayburn, Carl Albert and Tip O'Niell are rolling in their graves; Lyndon Johnson is laughing. Newt Gingrich is sneering as we speak.

This is war, dammit! The GOP knows they are on the ropes, why the hell doesn't the Speaker?

let Caligula continue his reign of terror unabated.

But she sure looks great in burgundy with pearls......

30. Well now there you go. I was seeking a post that made sense. Fashion.
I get it now.

My advice to Nance is get over yourself now. Make history happen.

It is in your hands.

Put IMPEACHMENT ON THE TABLE. FIRST COURSE! Skip the soup and salad, along with the bread.

15. how about if she allows HR333 to go forward and see if she can't
convince the House that she is speaker of and the country that she represents that there are grounds for impeachment. It is clear that there are grounds; she's holding up the process to investigate. Lead, follow, or as I prefer to say to her, get out the way.

25. HLLO. Impeachment s right under the table for good reasons. Give em credit
for playing this wisely. If Impeachment is moved to the top of the table, the Rs will start screaming. Meanwhile, they don't bring up the topic much, now do they, not even in the face of 36 investigations, 200+ hearings, numerous resignations, felony convictions.....

Give our leaders their due. They know what they are doing, and most DUers throwing stones are in the nose-bleed seats and have no clue about how to get it done.

31. work on getting me that in your spare time. my first act would be to let
HR333 go forward and then during the investigation we'd see all kinds of hideous behavior that this administration has been doing in our name.

I'll waive any compensation.

13. I think Leahy's had them all along
he's had that Cat with a Canary in his Mouth look for Months. He's been SITTING on the copies, while THEY'VE been LYING.

Probably told them he'd PRODUCE them FOR THEM :)

"Oops! Damn if you're not right Honey - There's my girlfriend's phone number, on that scrap of paper, it was IN my OTHER PANTS! You don't want to file for divorce over a silly misunderstanding, do you?"

22. if he does have copies of e-mails that have been subpoenaed...
Who owns them? Since the WH has been ordered to turn them over--in other words, the e-mails are in the legal, if not physical, possession of Congress--could Leahy bring out his copies (if he has them) and just go "ta daaa!"

And if the RNC owns one of the servers, don't e-mails go through several, and couldn't they be found on a server that doesn't belong to the RNC?

I'm not asking you specifically, symbolman, just throwing the question out there in case anybody knows the answer.

29. The temerity of their lies boggles the mind. The "lost email" story is obstruction of justice
or at the very least contempt of Congress. Leahy doesn't need an investigator, he needs an exterminator.
