15. Now that's rich. . .
Especially since an investigation needed to be launched into the duplicitous way these alleged "christians" gathered their petitions because they deceived voters. . .and their rhetoric of threats (including a lawsuit launched by Romney) against legislators is well-documented.

Their use of unwarranted lies, falsehoods perpetuated by the Catholic Church, outrageous rhetoric by "MassResistance" and their combination of curses and dire warnings about the destruction of the state by God should have been reason enough for legislators to do the majority's bidding and trash this travesty immediately.

These people represent nothing more than a MINORITY which attempted to REMOVE the rights of another MINORITY.

Frankly, if this had passed, I would have been all for petitioning for a constitutional amendment removing rights from members of MassResistance. After all, the "people" should be allowed to vote on THEIR marriages too.

12. Hooray for MA!!!
I only wish that the dirty neocon fundies had not had control in Wisconsin. That lead to a progressive state like Wisconsin having a punitive hate driven amendment passed by a vote of the people.

Gay marriage is banned in Wisconsin thanks to the fear mongering, hate rallying, "Phobia on the Family" garbage eaters.

One vote allowed the amendment to go to the ballot last year. One vote. allowed the backwoods republicans to rally people to the polls to vote for inequality, hate and fear.

It's been an odd process. I'll have to write a post describing the process so people can get a better understanding of it. In many ways it's very different from marriage.

31. Boston Archdiocese has a statement out already
http://www.rcab.org/News/releases/2007/statement070614.html

Ignoring the will of more than 170,000 people who signed the marriage petition and blocking the people from exercising their right to vote is tragic.

In the Commonwealth, our state laws provide for the process whereby the citizens have a right to vote on a constitutional amendment. However, the leadership of the Democratic Party refuses to allow citizens and elected officials to vote their conscience on social issues. Their ideological positions undermine the common good. Today, the common good has been sacrificed by the extreme individualism that subordinates what is best for children, families and society.

It is obvious from the unprecedented amount of pressure that was put upon elected officials that opponents of the amendment believed that the voters of the Commonwealth would have voted in favor of the traditional definition of marriage. The pressure tactics were engineered to insure that the will of the people would not prevail.

The question for those elected officials who opposed allowing the marriage amendment to be voted on by the people is: do we live in a country where people are free to vote their conscience or are we controlled by what is viewed as politically correct and by powerful special interest groups?

I made my voice heard on this a long time ago and again and again.

But then again, I disagree with a lot of the Archdiocese's statements!

And the Catholic Church, for that matter! :P

48. Typically, the Catholic Church believes that the "will" of 170,000
people, out of a commonwealth population of 6.4 million, is a complete representation of the opinions of the whole population.

What this amendment petition amounted to was a MINORITY attempting to have the rights of ANOTHER MINORITY removed by amending the Constitution.

Frankly, if this had passed, I would hope the GLBT community in Massachusetts would author a similar amendment aimed at con-artist conservative political action committee members masquerading as "christians" and their relationships. The first time one minority is allowed to take away the rights of another, no one's rights are safe. . .anyone can then petition to remove the rights of all kinds of people.

The Catholic Church, which continues to pretend that it didn't mean to actively and purposefully hid criminal sexual abuse within it's own walls, hardly has any moral foundation to stand upon. Any other organization which would have perpetrated so many numbers of crimes would have been de-recognized.
