Do Republicans want a fuehrer? Do Americans?
Clearly Giuliani wants to be one.

Fuehrer means 'leader' in German.

"Giuliani: Nation lacks strong leadership"

Yes, Rudy, if we only had a fuehrer.

"Speaking at a Flag Day rally in Wilmington, Del., Giuliani told more than 200 supporters:
"What we're lacking is strong, aggressive, bold leadership like we had with Ronald Reagan."

Actually Rudy, that is what we have now. Bush is certainly aggressive, and strong, if that is another way of saying stubborn. And bold? The Bush adminstration loves to propose really hugely stupid things - a massive tax cut aimed at the wealthy, getting rid of Social Security, a war in Iraq, and since they are really big changes, they are pronounced as being 'bold'.

A huge majority of Americans think the country is "going in the wrong direction". Rudy's answer is that America needs Rudy to boldly lead the country in Rudy's direction, even though Rudy disagrees with the majority of Americans on Iraq.

The Declaration of Independence declares that Government is there to 'serve' the public. Not to rule, or to lead, but to serve. America does not need a fuehrer, and the world certainly does not need another one. To quote another Reagan, I hope Republicans 'just say no' to Rudy Giuliani and his fuehrer principle.

1. The right clearly wants a father figure
Someone that makes them feel safe and secure. Someone to tell them stories about how America is out there fighting the good fight and keeping evil at bay.

They want a fairy tale. And that is exactly what the NeoCons want to give them. A fairy tale to entrance them while their rights and power are taken away from them to place them into a stupor. Safe and secure and controlled.

2. well, that's one part of it...
They also want to feel SUPERIOR to all other races and peoples. That was also a big part of Hitler's appeal as well - the Aryan Superman. Hence their disdain for rights of women, gays and minorities.

6. Well, I like fathers. At least my father.
I cannot imagine either Rudy or Bush as my father.

But in 2000, Bush ran as a quasi-moderate - a compassionate conservative.
Since 911, the theme has been 'protect us from the ruthless enemy' but even in 2004 in his acceptance speech he talked about all the funding he was giving or gonna give to student loans and other social services. He stressed his honesty 'we may not agree, but at least you know where I stand'.

I thought Plaid Adder was right on when she said we need to tell our own story, our own fairy tale, as it were. That our story could be the classic western, where the town is under control of the powerful rancher and the outside gunslinger comes in to save the day. Trouble is, the fairy tale they are telling fits into standard American mythology. We try to debunk the myths, which is a good thing, but will not win elections until the schools and newspapers do their jobs. Until then, we need to use those myths to tell our own story. Republicans say we need another Reagan. Why can't we say we need another FDR?

7. let's hope Mayor McFuehrer stays in the twenties.
Do people know that much about him, or have they just heard some sound-bites or read a positive article in the Reader's Digest. I expect his candidacy to die when the base learns he's pro-choice.

8. Yep.
Two of my friends - both Catholics & fairly right-wing - were talking about how they liked Giuliani for President in '08. I told them the NYC firefighters didn't care much for him and why, and they still sided with him...but as soon as I told them he was pro-choice, BAM - they immediately declared they couldn't vote for him. I imagine it'll be that way with a lot of others, too.
