12. The Question Was Deaf, Not Stupid. |
|
Edited on Thu Jun-14-07 02:50 PM by OPERATIONMINDCRIME
Since the question wasn't about if you were blind, then a response of 'what?' (generally used as a cliche retort to such a question of hearing when spoken aloud) to a written question, was just quite simply stupid in premise.

9. Nothing more than curiosity, |
|

I don't know sign language, I do know a deaf woman, when she comes to the office, most people usually smile and wave and are friendly with her but the barrier stilts true interaction. I was just thinking last night how the internet eliminates much of that barrier. Then I thought how many people have I been communicating with on the internet that I could only smile and wave to in the real world?
Personally, I'm hard of hearing and am gradually becoming isolated from the general flow of conversation, and people get aggravated, if you ask them to repeat them selves too many times. No doubt I will need a hearing aid in short order, but I dread getting it.

10. ahh. What I remember from the coworker is that people assumed he couldn't |
|
read lips, even though he always reminded them he did. They would write stuff down, which he felt was a bit condescending. After he and I got comfortable communicating, people would pull me in the room to "translate", which was completely unnecessary, and i told them so. So, after a while, the big boss kept making me do this, so the coworker and I would sign all sorts of insults about the big boss while pretending to translate. After he left the room we'd collapse on the floor laughing. That still cracks me up.

13. yup, we wouldn't have done it except the big boss was such a jerk about it. |
|
he would tell me to chew the guy out and never address him directly, even though he was standing right there, and could read his lips telling me to chew him out, which was not my job btw, I was in a different dept. and not a supervisor.
My favorite was the time the big boss told me "tell him to do the job right this time and no more goofing off on the company dime". So I signed "this f--ck head wants to eat your sh-t and make you the boss of the company, and call him "sparky" while he wears ladies' underwear. Oh, and do the job right this time."
