CUPERTINO, California—June 14, 2007—Apple® today announced that more than 1 million copies of Safari™ for Windows were downloaded in the first 48 hours since the free public beta was made available on Monday. Safari 3 is the world’s fastest and easiest-to-use browser, and is available as a free download at www.apple.com/safari.

Safari 3 is the fastest browser running on Windows, rendering web pages up to twice as fast as IE 7 and up to 1.6 times faster than Firefox 2, based on the industry standard iBench tests.* Safari 3 supports all modern Internet standards including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, SVG and Java. Safari updates are delivered seamlessly through Apple’s Software Update, and the first update for Safari for Windows Public Beta which fixes some early reported bugs was released last night.

Safari 3 for Windows requires Windows XP or Windows Vista, a minimum of 256 MB of memory and a system with at least a 500 MHz Intel Pentium processor.

They already have issued one patch to it. It will be interesting to see if it erodes any of the IE or Firefox user base.

We use the iMac with the "ball" on the bottom. My wife and I both have the same problems, and we both use the same mac. But we need this model, as the later ones no longer run classic! :(

20. I had that model and

as I recall, Safari worked okay for me. I had other problems with that unit, such as it locking up altogether and crashing repeatedly. I eventually upgraded to a G5 and had the G4 (desk-lamp edition) refurbished for my adult daughter who is still using it. It wasn't new, but gave me a chance to buy her an upgrade without actually buying her an upgrade and hurting her pride a bit (she just adopted my old computer and helped me out by doing so).

As for the "No-Scripts" you probably mean extensions and add-ons. They usually get developed and added on a daily basis as a browser gains in popularity.

11. First thoughts on the first five minutes of use.

Not bad. It's certainly different from what I'm used to (firefox) and it'll take some getting used to.

I don't really notice a huge speed difference when I load pages. I don't like the skin either (and I don't see where it can be replaced). You can turn off javascript but I haven't tried going to a pop up heavy site to try that out yet.

Minor gripe, I don't see where I can turn off the underline hyperlinks because I really hate that and I apparently I can't turn that off. That and I don't see any mouse gestures or more advanced tab controls.

Other than that, it looks to be ok. I'm not sure if I'll be sticking with it but at least I haven't gotten any errors yet.

If anything, it is slower than Firefox, both opening up as well as loading pages. Not sure about IE because I don't use it, but Apple's claims are false.

You might feel its not as fast on your set-up but according to iBench (which is the industry standard BTW - CNET etc use it in all of their reviews).

Apple CEO Steve Jobs touted Safari 3's speed as one of its most appealing features. But in tests by Wired News, the first public beta of Safari for Windows is actually slower than both Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2 when accessing Ajax-intensive web applications.

To test each browser's speed, I measured download times for the following test cases:

* Time to download the login page for Google Mail
* Time from login until the Google Mail index page appeared, with 50 messages, and all graphics and message status indicators
* Time to launch Google Calendar and display two subscribed calendars

Details and a graph of the results after the jump.

Using a Windows XP Service Pack 2 machine, I tested Firefox 2, Internet Explorer 7, and Safari 3, running the above suite at least three times for each browser. In between each suite I logged out of Google, cleared each browser's cache, history, cookies, and associated files, then shut down and restarted the browser.

The results show that Safari is slower than both IE 7 and Firefox in the login page and message index tests, in both cases by a substantial margin. Only when loading Google Calendar does Safari have a slight edge, clocking in at 12.8 seconds to IE's 17 seconds. But even there, Firefox has both the other browsers beat.
