3. 'Expired'? Is that what it's called now?
Edited on Thu Jun-14-07 04:58 PM by tblue
A gallon of milk, a credit card, a drivers license expires. I'm sorry. It just sounds like she went rancid or something.

But I am very sorry for Mrs. Graham and condolences to the Reverend.

18. You still buy into the death taboo?
Call death for what it is, death.

Euphemisms seek to obscure meaning, and keeps the misplaced hang-ups about death at bay.

I don't know the first thing about her, but I believe her husband was the genuine article, unlike some of the shyster preachers that are always in the news.

29. "Expired" is the medical term
When you die in a medical setting, the MD writes in your chart "Patient expired at ..... (time of death).

Just FYI. :hi:

28. Notice how many obits say stuff like
"went to his final reward" and "was called home by the lord"?

When I wrote 'em, everybody died. I could verify that they died, but I couldn't verify any of that other stuff.

"Mr. Christ? Yeah, Dave at the Free Lance. Hey, you get a guy named Ralph Mellish up there on Tuesday? Okay, did you call him, or...?"

52. You wrote obits? Oh here's another one I heard from Johnny Carson:
"Making a call from the horizontal phone booth"

I mean no disrespect. I'm sorry about the passing of who I am sure was a fine woman. It's just 100+ degrees in this room and I, along with my mind, am melting.

25. Oh geez. You are funny! Expired doesn't offend me, but it has a ring of sterility to it.
As if it's a kinder, gentler way to say the 'D' word. Sorta like Nazi 'resettlement' and 'special treatment.'

btw: Johnny Carson once called it 'Driving the wooden chariot.'

He's not dead. That's a different person.

His statement issued over his wifes death:

``Ruth was my life partner, and we were called by God as a team,'' Billy Graham said in a statement. ``No one else could have borne the load that she carried. She was a vital and integral part of our ministry, and my work through the years would have been impossible without her encouragement and support.

``I am so grateful to the Lord that He gave me Ruth, and especially for these last few years we've had in the mountains together. We've rekindled the romance of our youth, and my love for her continued to grow deeper every day. I will miss her terribly, and look forward even more to the day I can join her in Heaven.''

I know. I was in third grade in 1968 there. Can't say it united the communities, but I had African-American classmates. This was done without the riots and white flight that later plagued Boston.

51. Actually, they did.
Also, there was a family feud about where both of the elder Grahams would be buried. Franklin was insistent they be buried in Charlotte, SC where the Billy Graham museum was built. Ruth hated the "Disney-like atmosphere" at the museum and wanted desperately to rest in peace in their beloved mountains at a retreat she and Billy had built about 15 miles from their beloved home in Montreat, NC. The whole family was divided and there were major arguments and divisiveness.

She had been very ill for some time and eventually the family felt it was time to let go. Food and medication were then withheld; she fell into a deep coma and died.

I'm sure this will not be the end of this controversy. The author, Patricia Cornwell, wrote a biography of Ruth and they remained close. Cornwell appeared on Good Morning America and discussed the controversy. She told the GMA viewing audience that Ruth hated the museum and did not want to be buried there. I'm sure that she did not get her wish, but her son, Franklin, did. He is now the head of the Graham ministries.

Sorry, I don't remember the link, but googling should give you this and more information.

53. Interesting - She died the same way Terri Schiavo did.
Funny, I don't remember any emergency bills in Congress about this.

Oh, and lookie what I found on Yahoo Answers -

What's the difference between Michael Schiavo and Billy Graham in pulling out their wives' feeding tubes?

Yesterday, Ruth Bell Graham lapsed into a coma, suffering complications from pneumonia. Earlier this week, with a doctor's approval, Rev. Graham and several of the children, including Franklin, decided to withdraw the solids and liquids from her feeding tube.

When Michal Schiavo decided to have the feeding tubes pulled out to let his wife die, the radical Christians and the Right Wing Media were raising hell. Now that Rev. Graham and his children are promoting faster death for Mrs. Graham, the same radical Christians remain as quiet as church mice.

For one thing, Rev. Graham is strongly against mixing religion and politics, for another thing, I've heard that he's a Democrat and lastly, I'm convinced that Rev. Graham is no hypocrite. That's how they are different from most of the religious right.
