Adult breastfeeding puts cleric under fire
Cairo, Egypt - Al-Azhar University, one of Sunni Islam's most prestigious institutions, ordered one of its clerics Monday to face a disciplinary panel after he issued a controversial decree allowing adults to breast-feed.

Ezzat Attiya had issued a fatwa, or religious edict, saying adult men could breast-feed from female work colleagues as a way to avoid breaking Islamic rules that forbid men and women from being alone together.

In Islamic tradition, breast-feeding establishes a degree of maternal relation, even if a woman nurses a child who is not biologically hers. It means the child could not marry the nursing woman's biological children.

Attiya - the head of Al-Azhar's department of Hadith, or teachings of the Prophet Muhammad - insisted the same would apply with adults.

He argued that if a man nursed from a co-worker, it would establish a family bond between them and allow the two to work side-by-side without raising suspicion of an illicit sexual relation.

2. Sounds like this guy needs to be removed to me.
Sucking on a co-workers breasts REMOVES suspicion
that the relationship is other than just professional?

Hm'kaaaaay.....:wtf:

With logic skills like that, why is this guy not working for the Gonzales DOJ yet?

Yeah. Because there's nothing like suckling your colleague's baby feeders to put the kibosh on those nasty sexual urges.

Can scientists locate the insane fundamentalist gene already and find a cure?

On the upside, at least nobody around the office will need to pass the hat to buy more Coffee-Mate.

4. Something to keep in mind
This is from a far, far different culture than ours.

It doesn't make it right -- or wrong. But it DOES mean that it will be judged by different rules and thought processes.

But I have yet to read about a stampede of adult breast feeding in Egypt.

--p!

6. Okay, is it wrong that I'm kinda chuckling? "...a stampede of adult breast feeding in Egypt."

And for the record, I was going to post something similar to what you did: "Don't judge harshly, or at all, really, until you've tried to put this in some sort of appropriate cultural context." Not to mention that this story was filtered through the lense of a (possibly Western) media translator. So who knows what other kinds of contextul information were left out. But now I'm thinking about hoardes of Egyptian folks seeking to breast feed ravenously.

9. BITTY!!
Stephanie Miller has been playing this Emily Howard quote to death on her show:
"I'm a lady, I don't have testicles. Well perhaps tiny little lady testicles."

8. Just thinking of my co-workers, that would give a whole new meaning to the term
"let down" reflex.

10. Actually the logic is very nearly impecable.
But it is a tad naive in it's simplistic assumption of strict adherence to custom.

But then again on of the things that gets furthest up our Western noses is how too many men in Middle Eastern cultures can get away with rape, because the woman failed to meet the forms and follow the rules. It pisses me off as much as it does anyone. However, until it changes, it is a reality that does have to be lived with (particularly by the people of those cultures).

And one thing at least, those same rules contain a whole world of hurt for a man who rapes his "mother". It would be a fairly strong deterrent for illicit office relationships.

Perhaps it could be done a little more symbolically, with the woman expressing in private and the men each drinking a small portion in front of appropriate witnesses. Though I believe that breastfeeding is the norm in the ME. An exposed teat may well be nothing more than a milk spigot.

excuse me for sounding intolerant, but this dumbass (and I assume his "followers") sound a wee bit obsessed. OMG--a man and a woman were "alone together"!! stop the train! :wtf:
