Wouldn't it be fun to watch some heads explode?
Edited on Fri Jun-15-07 12:01 AM by RGBolen
At the sound of a president taking the oath of office in Spanish? There is nothing prohibiting a president from using any language of the citizenry to take the oath.

Edited to add: In Louisiana many governors and other office holders routinely take the oath in French and English, and some in just French.

1. I don't see the problem with doing it in English.
So, no.

3. Hey, he could do it in klingon, that way nobody but a few star trek nerds would understand.
Or even better, just make up a whole new language on the spot.
Or, he could do it in English. The language our constitution and declaration of independence are written in.
The language that every immigrant has had to learn to be a functioning member of society.
My paternal ancestors were the first Irish immigrants, my maternal were German much more recently and my wifes' parents came here from Guatemala in the 80's. And the one thing they all have in common is English. I don't see the problem with it and I don't see a need to change it.
I don't think it would be a very funny "prank" at a solemn swearing in ceremony. As a matter of fact, any pranks at a swearing in ceremony are entirely inappropriate.

6. Forget that. I would love to see someone sworn into office on Leaves of Grass
Or perhaps Origin of the species.
