So Thompson wants Roe v. Wade repealed. Ponder this, then:
If Thompson ends up being their nominee (unlikely, but still, what if?),
and our nominee is someone you don't care for (Hillary, Obama, take your
least favorite of the bunch, whoever it is). I mean like, "oh, no, we're
doomed/useless/screwed, no way I'm voting for him/her!" type of don't care for.

Would you still sit it out, and let the chips fall where they may? Knowing that
if Thompson gets in, he nominates at least one Supreme Court Justice, and you KNOW
what that means: a Scalia-Thomas-Alito clone. Or do you work for, support, or at least
vote for the Democratic candidate that you don't like? A vote for a third party
candidate is as much a "no" as an abstention.

Holding our noses has become a Democratic pastime ever since Kennedy was nominated
in 1960--there have ALWAYS been a large number of Democrats dissatisfied with the
nominee since I can remember, possible exceptions being 1964 and 1996. Even so, there
have been many posts here saying "if ________ is the nominee, I will NEVER vote for
them!"

Given what's at stake, does that hold no matter what? Or would you sigh, and bring
yourself to vote, hating the system that forces you to vote for someone you dislike,
but not enough to dare give a Fred Thompson even the smallest chance of becoming
our next president?

I have two young daughters who have American citizenship, so the choice is obvious
for me. Just as obviously, many others are in completely different situations, and
for some the choice will be neither obvious or painless.

Any thoughts?

14. I wasn't aware that FT would favor a repeal of Roe v. Wade
Edited on Fri Jun-15-07 12:52 PM by slackmaster
He hasn't been in any of the "debates".

Has he made a statement about it recently?

Can you cite a source for that information, please? I don't follow the MSM.

9. I am, too.
I know plenty of Repugs, and all of them not only want Thompson, but also say that the other Repug candidates are useless pieces of shit. No argument from me, of course, but these guys HATE the other Repug candidates (except for Tancredo, who has no more chance of getting the GOP nomination than Jane Fonda does).

7. I think you make a good point
perhaps a little impassioned. Personally I would always have to vote for the Democrat because of my views on women's reproductive rights. Right now I'm very angry with the Democrats because Ms. Polosi took impeachment off the table, but I'll always vote for one, I don't kid myself on that. And look at my call name.

8. America had better wake up ASAP....these guys are using wedge issues no end..Gore is right..
the BIG PICTURE is our PLANET

We are slowly taking steps to TOXIFY our one and only HOME....

After reading his ASSAULT ON REASON....the man clearly shows he is of PRESIDENTIAL TIMBER...make it TITANIUM.....

I won't have to hold my nose when voting BLUE...the challenge is to encourage VOTING KNOWLEDGE ..

With Astuteness comes the ability to smell BS when it presents it self...especially from the Repigs...Bush and GOP have given us Crap for YEARS...and, it seems, we have learned to LOVE IT..

some of us, 26%, actually LOVE THE CHIMP. They have learned to Hate the LEFT as if we were a disease or something....But it is THEY and their GOP/BUSH who are the real destroyers of Human Life...

This abortion thing is but a tool for them...and They KNOW IT...

10. I have some preferences, but there's NO Dem candidate that I
"wouldn't vote for!". Before Shrub, I honestly believed there wasn't much diff. btween the two parties, and (God forgive me) I remember when Shrub first took office, I said "How much damage can one guy really do? Congress & the Judicial Branch will keep him from going completely nuts!" WELL....I quickly found out how WRONG I was !

There are parts of some of what the Pub candidates say that I can agree with, but Shrub has really screwed the Party. I will NEVER vote for any Pub, no matter what they say or do! And I sure as hell wouldn't stay home! Do that and you're handing the election to your opposition!!!!

12. Barring a political meltdown, so will I
But: I have seen numerous posts on the boards saying
"I will never vote for (take yer pick)," and I have to
wonder if, faced with the dire consequences of someone
like Thompson in the White House for 4 years, would those
people (or at least some of them) relent?

18. The choice line is the only line I won't cross
It's like the abolitionist line in the 1850s, some things are BASIC to our rights as free and independent human beings.

Having said that, I guarantee I will vote for any pro choice Democrat who is presented to me as the candidate. There are some I would prefer and a few I might deplore, but even the latter are so preferable to the best the GOP has to offer us as to provide little disincentive.

Just once in my life, though, I wish I had the opportunity to vote FOR president instead of just against the other guy.

20. even if he is the nominee, he won't get elected
and the Pukkkes will look like laughingstocks--once again they pick a guy who can "act" like a president.

The only way he can get in is to cheat--which they will no doubt try to do.

We have to overwhelm their numbers at the polls, so they can't. They need a close race to cheat, and that won't happen with ANY Republican for a generation (they have to wait for today's voters to die and be replaced with fresh new ones after the mess they have made)

22. I'm SOOOOOO sick of having to hold my nose when I go to vote, but....
you do have a point.

And for some of the potential nominees I'd need a huge honkin' clothespin for my nose, but again...

AY YI YI.

WHY is it that the nose-holding thing has become a Democratic pastime?? We probably need to abolish the stupid two-party system and go to a parliamentary-type system like those countries in Yurp.

23. I'd like to know what the DLCers would do if it came down to a liberal and Fred Thompson.
Edited on Fri Jun-15-07 01:25 PM by Marr
No wait- actually I have some idea, after watching the Lieberman/Lamont race. Party loyalty seems to be a one way street.

I'm not inferring that you're a DLCer, DFW- just noting that this question was raised alot in the last nomination process, and my answer is now that I will not vote for anyone that's not addressing the issues I care about. Period.

Also, I think this sort of casual admission that you'll accept pretty much anything the party leadership decides to toss you only serves to marginalize you. It's like walking into a car dealership and saying you're definitely going to buy that blue car over there today. The guy's not going to haggle a hell of alot if he knows he's got you.

25. I'm not advocating blind party loyalty--this is specific
To this (2008) election.

I am most definitely NOT DLC. Howard Dean happens to be a personal
and close political friend, if that gives you an idea where I stand.
I'd still be thrilled to see him as president, and not just to sleep
in the Lincoln bedroom, either (a bed's a bed).

I'm afraid that with the Supreme Court in play here, in THIS PARTICULAR
election, the car dealer, I'm afraid, does indeed know I will buy a car.

He'll know that if I'm not satisfied with it, it'll appear in every bit
of media where he wants to advertise his dealership, but in this case,
where it comes to women I care about and their rights, you're right
about one thing: I'm not walking.

24. tough question
like Slackmaster, I haven't paid any attention to Thompson.

I'm a male (with a vas) and have no children, so abortion doesn't 'personally' affect me either way.

I'm also a feminist, and absolutely believe in a woman's right to control her body, so abortion does affect me.

Mrs Clinton is my least fvorite Dem candidate ( I voted Nader in 1996, and I don't like her any better than I did her husband :) (referencing your "possible exceptions" comment) ) so the question you pose does seem to have some realistic possibility.

I can't honestly answer your question. Ask me again after the election, and I'll tell you who I voted for.

26. This is a point that will need to be made over and over again
on a range of issues, including reproductive rights.

My least favorite Democratic candidate looks awful standing next to my favorite. But that same least favorite Democratic candidate looks like a SAINT standing next to any of the Republicans in the field!!
