Former rising-star Republican pleads no contest to more child sex

Giordano, a former state representative and one-time rising star in Republican politics, is serving a 37-year sentence in the federal case.

WATERBURY, Conn. – The city's former mayor, already serving a 37-year federal prison sentence for having sex with children, pleaded no contest Tuesday to state child-sex charges and was sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Philip Giordano entered pleas to four counts of first-degree sexual assault and four counts of conspiracy to commit sexual assault, charges based on allegations that he paid a crack-addicted prostitute to bring her 8-year-old daughter and 10-year-old niece to him for oral sex.

Giordano, wearing a wrinkled gray suit and black T-shirt, answered “nolo” – the Latin legal term for “no contest” is “nolo contendere” – to each charge at it was read by Judge Joan Alexander in Waterbury Superior Court...

Tuesday was the second straight day a former Waterbury mayor was sentenced. On Monday, former Mayor Joe Santopietro (Republican) received five years of probation for his role in a conspiracy to fix prices in the trash industry in Connecticut and New York.
