Conservative bloggers in full revolt over immigration
Conservative bloggers in full revolt over immigration
By Peter Hamby
CNN Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Different conservative blogs have different pet issues -- government transparency, federal judges, Fred Thompson, to name a few. But no issue in recent memory has united conservative bloggers like the debate over immigration. Their frustration has culminated in a full-scale revolt against the Bush administration and a Senate bill that activists say does little to solve the country's border security problems.

President Bush's pledge to support $4.4 billion in additional border security funds has breathed new life into the bill, but the drumbeat against the legislation shows no signs of quieting. It's increasingly clear from Web postings and interviews with top conservative bloggers that the immigration bill has done serious damage to the president's credibility among the conservative netroots, the grassroots bloggers on the Web.

Erick Erickson, managing editor of the popular conservative blog RedState.com, says he receives between 800 and 900 e-mails a day from readers, most of whom are "enraged" by the White House's immigration efforts. "Of all the issues the president has picked to make his hill to die on, he has picked the one that has divided his base," said Erickson, who lives in Macon, Georgia. "I am shocked by the anger and outrage out there ... You've got war against the president within the Republican party."...

According to several top conservative bloggers, Bush simply has a credibility problem when it comes to border security. "The administration has not done anything to fix the border or the visa program," said Ed Morrissey, the Minnesota-based founder of the blog Captain's Quarters. "It's a huge gap in national security. It's been six years past 9/11 and the administration has done nothing to fix either one."...

4. But that is IT...they finally have an issue for which they can
legitimately oppose him on...dare not it be the war lest they be characterized as liberal lefties. At long last, this is a realization of a failed presidency upon which they can base their disparaging attitudes, not wholly unjustified. This is an appropriate moment for an Orwell quote: the first responsibility of an intelligent citizen is to notice the obvious. It's just a few yrs too late.

6. Nicely expressed. The Bush presidency has been a failure...
since day one. This is an issue with which they can disavow Dubya.

17. The immigration issue appears bogus as family values.
How else will Republican leaders to divert these nitwits attention away from the notion that the middle class Republicans get screwed by big oil and big business, and instead focus on the Mexican under their beds.

Repeat after me: Republicans hate Mexicans. They don't hate people from other countries except for arab countries. Ok Republicans hate Arabs and Mexicans, but they don't get their hair on fire about Canadians, British, Germans, Swedes and Norwegians.

3. So is DU.
I don't see much at the other blogs like Kos or MyDD, but DU is very anti-immigrant.

Sure took me by surprise.

8. Not my read
From what I've seen on DU, the argument is consistently against ILLEGAL immigration and with most who hold that view stating they are OK with legal immigration that follows those guidelines.

19. Can't agree completely.
Many do argue that the fact that they are illegal makes them easier to exploit by employers and is inconsistent with the "rule of law."

If you pose the hypothetical of would they support immigrantion if the 12 million "illegals" could be "traded" for 12 million legal immigrants and some of the veneer gets stripped off. It then becomes a discussion of the increased supply of low-skilled labor driving down wages and job opportunities of American workers.

11. My primary concern about the immigration bill is....
...."The proposed legislation would require every job applicant in America to have their eligibility to work verified by the DHS, using the error-plagued Employment Eligibility Verification System (EEVS)."

13. no we're not
I know I'm new, but we aren't anti immigrant.. i suspect the opposition at DU is due to the rule of law, etc.

Also, keep in mind we are fighting a political battle, it does good for the democrats to keep this issue in the forefront but letting it die then reviving it several times, it drives the conservatives mad and they start to hate their own leadership! grab a bag of popcorn and enjoy!

10. The immigration bill is being pushed by the establishmentarians
The blogs and BB's on the Left mostly oppose the bill too, though not as intensely as our counterparts on the Right. This bill is not exposing a liberal/conservative divide, but rather, an establishment/grass roots divide.

And rightfully so. The bill was written by the corporate paymasters at the Chamber of Commerce who are drooling at the prospect of millions of desperate, low wage, low skill workers who they can indefinitely abuse and exploit.

12. this is what we should do...
keep killing and then reviving the bill and blaming it on the republican leadership... this will cause the base to start to hate their leadership and lead to a republican civil war..

we should divide and then conquor them

15. LOL, the US has always had an "immigration problem"
It is built on the concept.

Right wingers are such morans. Why not let the free market decide? Why is this issue suddenly different? Hmmmmmm.

16. the racist, bigoted, pinhead a-holes AREN'T PO'd about *'s lies to war
or the many many ways in which *Co is ripping off their wallets every day--no, what has their dander up is the idea that someone poorer than they are might be getting "something for nothing"--as if risking your life crossing desert terrain on foot and confronting bigoted a-holes like themselves in pursuit of the dream of a better life is "nothing," and as if the immigrants really ARE getting "handouts."

F**K A-HOLE REACTIONARY XENOPHOBES. The fact that they are "against *" on this particular issue does not warm my heart, either, because it shows the rest of the world that "Americans" are intolerant and bigoted, not at all concerned about their dirty little invasion and occupation, and--bottom line--selfish dumbass fools.

18. And now, they are targeting visitors from risk countries like Switzerland
...and the rest of western Europe.

My wife is a German citizen, and she is not looking forward to her next visit with me to the USA.
I probably get better treatment due to my Texas address (j/k!!), but it's more and more of a chore
to convince her to come with me despite the fact that she has so many wonderful friends there, as well
as my family.

But, of course, that Swiss cheese has so many dangerous terrorist calories..........
