Iran Strategy Stirs Debate at White House

~snip~ ....especially those in Vice President Dick Cheney’s office who, according to some people familiar with the discussions, are pressing for greater consideration of military strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities.

5. The CNO, who is in line to be CJCS, got his big break
under Clinton. He wouldn't be where he is now if he hadn't gotten the N8 job at the Pentagon, which is a USN "power fulcrum" position.

I hope Mullen hasn't lost his mind. He always was a resonable young man. My hope is that Gates was "the decider" in making that choice. If he was, it will make a huge difference with regard to which way we go.

Cheney may have been a SECDEF once, but Gates used to be a CIA Director. And Gates is younger and in better health.

And what a topsy turvy world, where we root for Condi's success:

The debate has pitted Ms. Rice and her deputies, who appear to be winning so far, against the few remaining hawks inside the administration, especially those in Vice President Dick Cheney’s office who, according to some people familiar with the discussions, are pressing for greater consideration of military strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities....friends and associates of Ms. Rice who have talked with her recently say she has increasingly moved toward the European position that the diplomatic path she has laid out is the only real option for Mr. Bush, even though it has so far failed to deter Iran from enriching uranium, and that a military strike would be disastrous.

The accounts were provided by officials at the State Department, White House and the Pentagon who are on both sides of the debate, as well as people who have spoken with members of Mr. Cheney’s staff and with Ms. Rice. The officials said they were willing to explain the thinking behind their positions, but would do so only on condition of anonymity. ... the fallout from the Iraq war has severely limited the Bush administration’s ability to maneuver on the Iran nuclear issue and has left many in the administration, and certainly America’s allies and critics in Europe, firmly against military strikes on Iran. On Thursday, Mohamed ElBaradei, the head of the international nuclear watchdog agency, warned anew that military action against Iran would “be an act of madness.”

...Iran is far behind the North Koreans; it is believed to be three to eight years away from its first weapon, American intelligence officials have told Congress. Conservatives argue that if the administration fails to establish a line over which Iran must not step, the enrichment of uranium will go ahead, eventually giving the Iranians fuel that, with additional enrichment out of the sight of inspectors, it could use for weapons.

15.  No they are not , at least this is what we are told
I don't know if I buy into the idea that condi wants to actually talk to Iran . This is why I said I don't trust any of them .

Condi seems to be just a front to me .

I have read even bush wants talks and it is just cheney and now lieberman pounding the war drum .

It just seems like a diversion to me .

17. The ARTICLE,. though, says otherwise. I provided a cite that details Condi's
thinking on the matter. Perhaps she's taking advice from her paramour of the north.

You are, of course, free to disbelieve the article if you wish. I think it's well sourced, though.

18.  I don't doubt the source
I just have a very difficult time with condi , so far she has really done nothing as far as I can see . I have to really wonder why now she suddenly has this change of position and what her motives are .

Bush gave Iran his demand , no talks until Iran haults their nuclear program and proves this has been done .

So condi is now going to convince Iran to do this , Iran will not be bullied and with all the carriers in the gulf the bully is there and well known .

I hope you understand my doubts .

12. Prepare for War I have been saying this for years
the whole agenda of this presidency is attack on Iran but our military is losing that wasn't part of the neocon and PNac plan

what is amazing is how Cheney and Bush stay on their agenda...even if they are losing

it reminds me of Hitlers madness

but it exposes that our government is at the core rotten

We need a new government and I see major changes

because is Mr Cheney thinks Americans will fight his war for him

he is very wrong

what we have is a mercenary army...Mercenaries don't win wars
