much more than they're unlike us.
Personally, I think people like this who have put down roots should be allowed a way to become documented aliens with a path to citizenship for their children.
The people to go after aren't the people who came here desperate to find something better than they had at home. The people to go after are the cheap labor conservatives who exploit them in an attempt to hold wages down and destroy the right to unionize.
Shattering families like this one is not the answer. Rounding up entire workforces and shipping them out while their children are abandoned at day care is not the answer. Blanket amnesty isn't the answer, either.
The only way to slow the flood to a trickle is to remove the attraction of JOBS by enforcing the laws against employers. The only way to deal with the ones already here is on a case by case basis.

This has happened to a couple families here in our area and it is just heartbreaking. How can we do this to people in the United States?

These people obviously arrived in the US legally while 12 to 20 million came in illegally... This woman is deported, while 12 to 20 million are being considered to stay (having arrived illegally) There is absolutely no justification to this what so ever.
