Lawmakers expected to attend D.C. screening of new Moore film

By Jeffrey Young / The Hill

An invitation-only audience will get an advance look at Michael Moore’s latest piece of cinematic agitprop at a June 20 screening of “SiCKO,” the documentary filmmaker’s critical look at the American healthcare system.

Lawmakers and other assorted bigwigs are expected to attend the screening at the AMC Loews Uptown Theater in the District, as they did for an exhibition of Moore’s last film, the anti-Iraq war documentary “Fahrenheit 9/11,” in 2004.

Moore will be there, along with studio executives Bob and Harvey Weinstein and Moore’s attorney, David Boies.

“SiCKO” debuted at the Cannes Festival in France last month and will see its wide U.S. release on June 29. The film was not awarded any prizes, unlike “Fahrenheit 9/11,” which won the prestigious Palme d’Or in 2004.

Although “SiCKO” has been screened domestically only a handful of times, the film already has generated controversy for its creator. The film depicts Moore traveling to Cuba to seek treatments for ailing rescue workers from Sept. 11, 2001, in contravention of the U.S. embargo against the Communist nation.

1. lazy reporting...
"The film was not awarded any prizes, unlike “Fahrenheit 9/11,”

because Moore specifically did not enter it. He said it would be greedy of him when there are so many good entries.
