2. Woulda bet $ the first reply would regard the incredible Ms Jordan
Thanks, my friend, you do not disappoint.

Yep, stow that one away for those days when it seems pointless. She was truly amazing. I pity the youngsters who never heard her. Hope they take time to listen.

4. I won't argue with the list, since it's about rhetoric.
Which means the writers of the speeched deserve the credit. So that way I can accept all the Reagan bullshit.

I am pleased to see Ike's Farewell Address, in which he warned us about the Military Industrial Complex. Too bad the warning has been ignored.

It's also important to note that the list is for the 20th Century only. Hence no Lincoln.

6. Are they only listing speeches from the 20th Century?
To my mind, Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and his 2nd Inaugural should be in the top five.

19. Yes, only 20th Century.
I had the same reaction you did re. Gettysburg Address.

7. "a date that will live in infamy"
Chills. Damn, I miss this form of speechgiving.

I have on my PC a clip of CBS radio, December 7th, 1941, when they interrupted regular broadcasting with news of the Pearl Harbor attack.

12. Reagan's "Time for choosing". Apparently "great speeches" are made better when they are filled
with bullshit and lies.

14. Sometimes greatness is the historical context of a time, rather than just words?
;)

A glimpse of history can be a great thing for giving us context and perspective, especially when we are trying to dig our nation out of the load of crap that too many have taken as truth.

Hitler was the worst, but listening to him is great for what it teaches us about what to avoid.

18. Where are all of Georgie's speeches?
I particularly liked the one where he asked "Is our children learning?" I was truly inspired.
