WTF we doing there? Are we nuts? If this guy bin Laden was smart enough to plan 9/11 he certainly was smart enough to leave Afghanistan long before the U.S. calvary arrived. Wouldn't you think? How long have we been farting around there now? Six-plus fecking years? Christ, pretty soon we are going to be fighting against Afghans who weren't even born before 9/11/01. Then what?

Don

2. We were never meant to find him...
Cheney and Bush don't want a clearly defined goal.

3. He's in Pakistan - do you think we should invade Pakistan to get him?
The mission in Afghanistan is not to find OBL, but to keep the Taliban out of power while the elected government becomes stronger and more stable.

To get OBL means to once again disregard a sovereign state's control of its own borders. Musharaff is barely keeping the lid on a pot boiling with fundamentalist Islamic elements who want him gone, and a theocracy in its place in Pakistan, as we see in Iran. I'm not in favor of that. Are you?

15. So you have no evidence of where bin Laden is, right?
That is why you answered my question with another question isn't it?

Nice dodge though.

7. I would have to agree with Psephos...
He is in Pakistan precisely because he knows we won't invade.

Musharaff is hanging onto power by a thread. If we came blundering in, he would be deposed in a heartbeat.

Not only that, The Pakistani securitat, ISI, is known to be riddled with Taliban sympathizers. So any Special Forces missions to nab him would be leaked before they even got off the ground.

It's a theory, of course, and there is no way to test it.

9. Pakistan has already willingly ceded control of the provinces in question
to the Taliban, despite the BILLIONS America has sent for its "help" in the fight.

That kind of "sovereignty" wouldn't and shouldn't even be an issue, but Bush is loathe to harm the family connections to the Bin Ladens and Osama has served him so well politically.

5. Saving it for the next GOP pres
After they steal 2008 Fred Thompson will dramatically order his capture, which will be carried out forthwith. He'll be found dead, naturally, blown to pieces, but they won't tell you that they've had him on ice for years, since he died of natural causes long ago.

It'll be like the Iran hostages being released right after Reagan's inauguration.

Osama bin Laden is today's Emmanuel Goldstein. (1984)

I often wonder if this guy actually exists.

12. Years from now, our grandchildren will discover
that Bush made a deal with the bin Laden family to leave Osama alone in exchange for millions of dollars donated to his 2004 campaign. And the Republicans will try to justify it by saying that Osama was dying anyway. This is my prediction.

But seriously, we should have found him by now! Hussein was found, tried, and executed (and the huge public orgy of death surrounding his execution was quite a spectacle to watch) well before we have even remotely begun to look for Osama. I'm sure W knows where he is, he's just waiting for the right time to bring him out. A November '08 surprise? You betcha!

20. This is one thing that 20 years from now people will look back on and laugh at us
Consider this

With the military that we have right now-the single most lethal instrument in the history of man we are told and take as somewhat the truth that this "I will do whatever I want" President doesn't want to ruffle any Pakistani feathers so he shies away from either going in and getting him or completely leveling the entire region-dropping enough tonnage to actually scare everyone into something close to what the neocons thought the invasion of Iraq would do- because of the political reasons as stated before AND/OR because the region is too "remote and dangerous"....for our military.

Um okay. Sure.

Within 10 years my daughter is going to ask me to explain that and I will have no answer.

BTW I remember that image -was it in Time? Wow talk about suspending logic and reason :eyes: Where is the mini-Laden and the seabass with freakin' lasers?
