Iraq newspaper editor found dead
Cui bono?

Certainly not the Iraqis.

Iraq newspaper editor found dead

An Iraqi newspaper editor who was kidnapped by gunmen last week has been found dead in a Baghdad mortuary, according to his union.

The journalists' union says Filaih Wadai Mijthab's body was found riddled with bullets.

The managing editor of the state-run Al-Sabah daily was abducted on Wednesday from the Habibiyah neighbourhood, near the east Baghdad Shiite militia bastion of Sadr City.

Mr Mijthab is the latest of scores of print and broadcast journalists to lose their lives in Iraq since the US-led invasion of 2003.

As of June 6, 182 journalists had been killed, according to media watchdog Reporters Without Borders.

The vast majority have been Iraqis killed by insurgent groups or militias angered by their coverage or ideologically opposed to their employers.

Others have been caught in the crossfire between the opposing sides.
