GORE: “I have not ruled it out entirely because I’m only 59, and 59 is the new 58"
I might stand for President

From VICTORIA NEWTON
in Istanbul
June 18, 2007

DURING his interview with Victoria Newton, Al Gore gave the clearest hint yet that he may run for US President.

Mr Gore, who lost the 2000 election race to George W Bush, has so far refused to admit he has any interest in trying for office again.

But when I asked Mr Gore if he would consider going for the job, he replied: “I have not ruled it out entirely because I’m only 59, and 59 is the new 58, you know. But I don’t expect to be a candidate again.”

He claimed he has no time for politics because he has a moral duty to help save the planet.

“It feels like a worthwhile mission,” he added.

36. He's always been funny ....
(I know you are not implying he hasn't). That is what really ticked me off about the media portraying him as stiff and wooden in 2000 ... the guy has a quick wit and isn't afraid to use it.

37. Yes, he's always shown a wonderful self-deprecating humor...
...and that "59 is the new 58" joke was a great poke at popular culture, too.

2. He's smart not to close the door. But I must say, they sure know how to write a creative headline!
It manages to convey the opposite impression that Gore offered in the interview...

4. Is this the first time he specifically said he wasn't ruling out running?
It's a start, but c'mon Al, end the suspense!

This coming and going, Is driving me nuts,
This to-ing and fro-ing, Is hurting my guts,
Get off the fence now, It's creasing your butt...

5. Answer to Phredicles's Question
This is not the first time he's said he's not ruling out running. However, he's always careful to indicate that he's not ruling out running for some public office before he dies. He's never made that statement specific to the 2008 presidential race, to my knowledge.

He avoids creating candidate fatigue, and he doesn't give the corporate media a hard target to go after. I hope he runs, but I would prefer for him to stay out of it until the last possible minute.

12. I think Gore is well aware that there are a great many
voters of both parties not entirely happy with the current crop of candidates. He can afford to wait until fall to make a decision and still become the instant frontrunner. I think the nomination is his if he wants it.

13. K&R I think he's waiting one, for the Nobel Prize announcement and
two, to get a better feel for his candidancy. He's smart. He's saving tons of money by delaying while keeping himself free to do his work for the planet without the incumbrances of political campaigning. I hope he runs because I believe he can do more for global climate change from the WH than from a citizen's venue.

17. He got it from Sen. Robert Byrd. "90 is the new 80."
"I'm told that 90 is the new 80," Byrd, a Democrat, said in a statement issued by his office. "I am proud of my white mane, but I still long for the black hair of my youth."

21. My Prediction? He Won't Run!! I Think He KNOWS Knows He
already won once and he enjoys doing what he is doing now. Besides he's being a lot more influential right now and he doesn't have to deal with all the crap and attacks!! WHY would he WANT to jump into the mad house that these corrupt evil people have turned America into??

I think he's found where he wants to be and he's comfortable in the skin he's wearing now.

Just my two cents. But I'm sure ANYTHING could happen!

he takes care of himself he'll have a lot of years left to run again for Prez or not.

He's already won once but the USA wasn't ready for him..it had to through 8 years of bushit fascism for the country to appreciate what it fucking had and could have again, if it collectively gets off its somnolent butt.

"He claimed he has no time for politics because he has a moral duty to help save the planet."

Too bad others in this country don't feel the same way. Politics has done nothing but kill issues with its partisanship and grandstanding. Good for you, Mr. Gore. Keep them all dangling and hanging onto your words. They didn't lsiten for thirty years.
