Not political, just a Gay question..
Not to be offensive, but a friend and I were wondering why Barbara Streisand, Judy Garland, Liza Minelli and now, Cyndi Lauper, are all considered gay icons.? Just wondering.

1. I'm gay, I can't stand them
Streisand can't kick her NY accent.

Garland sang like a little girl when she wasn't.

Liza's fabulous outfits attempted to disguise her complete lack of bosom.

Cyndi's singing, if you can call it that, could peel paint.

130. Not to be offensive, but it's image over substance.
And yes, that's a cliche, but it worked for every gay person I've ever known, and I did Rocky Horror for a long time, so I know.

Remember the scene in To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar? The transvestites choose a rickety pink Cadillac over a more sturdy car, and sure enough, it breaks down. Appearance is more important than functionality.

I mean, Barbra Streisand, the woman who put together the Triangle of Zinthos and damn near destroyed South Park - for no reason! And yet Robert Smith of The Cure blew her into outer space. Cyndi Lauper, who I personally liked, but who was ten times more talented than Madonna, but lost big time to Ms. Reinvention and now does county fairs for chump change.

There's only one group of people more involved in style over substance than gays. The big macho males who drive gas-guzzling SUV's and vote for Bush.

143. So in essence, there are many stupid men out there.
who go for style over substance. Some are gay, and some are straight.

And this is political, or else we couldn't explain how it is that a untalented, unqualified little hack could ever make an election close enough to steal in 2000 and 2004. Bush never would have won if it weren't for the stupid-male vote.

152. I'd say more scared than stupid.
The stupid vote is probably a big hunk of Bush's remaining support. But most people voted for him out of pure fear.

It's important to remember that. If we want to change this country, we can't assume we're smart and that everyone else is stupid. Even if it's true, it's not the way to help people change. (And frankly, if we're so so smart, why ain't we rich?)

7. Speaking for the entire GLBT community
;)

1) They are "larger than life" -- they transcend the normal staid trends in some people's eyes.

2) Some of them are tragic figures, having gone through their ups and downs (Country Western examples...Tammy Wynette, Dolly to an extent)

3) Exhibitions of support for the GLBT community to a degree

4) Do not play by the rules as a rule

At the same time as no doubt has been mentioned-- not all are universally loved/adored and can be turned on in a heartbeat at times for sundry reasons.

(i.e. the Donna Summer rumors and fiasco, the Cher-Chastity brouhaha, my personal tepidness with Streisand--much prefer Linda Eder and Lara Fabian)

The summer that Sonny and Cher separated I was working at a resort area in southern Idaho. Lots of Hollywood people vacation there. A group of them told me that Cher was a lesbian and that was why Sonny was leaving her - he caught her with another woman. I wouldn't buy it but they insisted it was true. They said it was well known in the entertainment community that Cher was into girls.

And then all of those years later her daughter turns out to be ...

because they're Divas. although i don't know if Cyndy Lauper really belongs in your grouping, Divas are imperious, talented, tragic, iconic, camp. SOME, not ALL, gay men identify with highly stylized, individual expression of emotion by women.

15. Oh where do I start?
First we must correct your spelling. It's "Barbra" not "Barbara".

We're only hitting the tip of the Gay-berg with above mentioned divas. But I digress.

Judy - One of the reasons of La Garland's popularity is "The Wizard of Oz". That's a biggy with us homer-sexuals. "Oz" represents a land where people of all types are excepted. One of the reason the gay flag is a rainbow is because of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". Which is our unoffical national anthem. Other reason is that Judy herself represented struggle. She fought hard, loved hard and drank hard. She also married two gay men. Her over the top performances are almost like watching a campy drag queen. PLUS the of her funeral started the Stonewall Riots in NYC. Which is basically the start of the modern day gay rights movement.

Liza - Daugther of Judy.

Barbra - A misfit. A strong woman with her own vision of what is the norm. She was "different" looking when she was younger. She's gutsy. She knows what she wants to hell with everyone else, does it her way.

Cyndi - Cyndi is like a Barbra for the 1980's. She like La Striesand is different. She also is very outspoken in her support of gay causes and AIDS. She's a real friend.

44. Your response is very good.
I would add the following personal experiences of each:

Cyndi - gay sister.
Barbra - gay son.
Judy - gay husband (or two) and a gay father.
Liza - couple of gay husbands and a gay father.

Gay folk in the family can never hurt your appeal to the gay community.
Unless, of course, you turn on them and then your makeup and hair will be dreadful.

and her official website links to these:

1) Who would you rather share a foxhole with: a gay soldier or Mitt Romney?

2) The Surgeon General of the United States is supposed to be "America's chief health educator." But unfortunately, it is unlikely that Holsinger will give the American public sound "scientific" advice. Holsinger has a long history of prejudice toward gays and lesbians, once writing that homosexual behavior is "intuitively" unnatural.

Edited on Mon Jun-18-07 03:50 PM by pepperbear
a combination of the following:

1. they're tragic figures (even barbra, who came from nothing)
2. they're over-the-top larger than life strong female figures, and that makes for great drag performances (true dat)
3. they openly and vocally champion gay rights
4. There is empathy in exploitation
5. they have genuine stage talent, and gays do like the theater.

consequently, you find the following among the list of gay icons:

1. Marilyn monroe
2. shelly winters
3. joan crawford
4. judy garland
5. barbra streisand
6. carol channing
7. celine dion
8. liza minelli
9. mae west
10.tina turner
11.jayne mansfield
12. cyndi lauper
13. madonna
14. diana ross
15. princess diana
16. dorothy dandridge
17. gloria swanson and her most famous character, norma desmond

and the list goes on and on....

79. I know some who would argue against Ethel.
They would say - bad singer and bad dancer. All she had was volume. She could launch it to the back row and balcony of the theater before microphones.

She was also known to be pretty boorish in her behavior.

49. Stop
Stop stereotyping US and then asking why the stereotypes exist.

Often if someone is much loved by OUR community it's because they have a history of supporting us but you can't just make assumptions like that and ask it like an innocent question because first off, it's inane and second, it's not innocent. I mean why do straight men like Arnold and his Predator movies and why do straight women like Jane Eyre? 'Cause they all don't....though some do. It's just a stereotype.

...and for many we don't come in butch or femme though some do...just like other people....some play the feminine and masculine to heightened degrees and some don't. I see it more in straights actually.

Any other stereotyping questions?

Buzz Clik asks: Well, I've always wondered about Eskimos rubbing noses...

Unfortunately I found one of the most comprehensive answers on Jewish World Review, an EXTREMELY conservative website. (They have links to people like Ann Coulter.) Still, I imagine this non-controversial fact stuff is accurate:

http://www.jewishworldreview.com/0205/glad_u_asked.asp

Q: Why do Eskimos rub noses rather than kiss? - Jacquelin Peters

A: It's not so much rubbing noses as sniffing someone you love - their nose, cheeks, forehead - in a nuzzily show of affection.

And it's not done instead of kissing. It's usually a greeting rather than a romantic overture. In fact, in some northern cultures this is only done between mothers and children.

So the mental image we might have had of the "Eskimo kiss" was misleading. And that's true of some other stereotypes.

For instance, there's not one Eskimo people. There's the Kalaallit in Greenland, the Inuvialuit in Canada, and the Inupiaq, Yuplit, and Alutiiq in Alaska - just to name a few. Some Alaskan indigenous people accept the term Eskimo. Other peoples consider it offensive, because it was a label applied by Europeans and others. The arctic peoples of Canada and Greenland in general prefer the term Inuit.

And while some peoples did once live in ice block houses in central and eastern Canada, igloos were rare in Greenland and unknown in Alaska. Few remain anywhere now.

So what is behind nose-rubbing?

David Joanasi, information officer of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, a group representing the Inuit, says he grew up with this custom in northern Canada.

In his culture "it's called a kunik," he says. "When you're an infant and a little kid, your parents and grandparents and older siblings sniff you and rub your face with their nose."

When partners come home at night they might share a kunik to smell each other and nuzzle. There are scent glands in the cheeks, and rediscovering their smell this way is intimate and loving.

"I do it to my girlfriend," Joanasi says. "But I wouldn't do it in front of a large audience, the same way you wouldn't French kiss your partner in front of a bunch of kindergartners."

Yet it's not a big part of lovemaking - like kissing. "No, it's not like kissing in that way," Joanasi says. "It's just affectionate."

Erin Eckman, who is half-Inupiaq, works for the Alaska Native Heritage Center.

"Growing up in Alaska, I only really saw women do it to babies," she says.

So, if nose-rubbing isn't done instead of kissing, do native peoples of the North kiss? "Sure," she says.

END OF ARTICLE

113. Mainly because
they love us. That goes a long way.

But beyond that, they're talented, strong, yet very vulnerable women who speak to a large percentage of gay men. They're strong, but they've been hurt. They're tough, but they're soft. And all of them work(ed) their asses off on stage to please their audience - they tried os hard to be liked.

All of that is true for a substantial portion of gay men.

Edited on Tue Jun-19-07 04:41 AM by OneBlueSky
gay clubbers constitute only a small part of the overall gay population . . . despite the myths . . .

I'm gay, and I have no use for either Barbra or Liza . . . I like Judy Garland and appreciate her body of work but listen to her only very occasionally . . . I think Cyndi Lauper can range from brilliant to yuck . . . but when she's brilliant, she's REALLY brilliant . . . e.g. I saw her do a version of "Carey" at a Joni Mitchell tribute that just blew me away . . .

p.s. by gay clubbers I don't necessarily mean only gays who club-hop . . . I include in the term all gay men who are of that particulay sensibility, i.e. those who consider regular partying an a necessity of life . . .

133. What about the LESBIAN icons?
Whenever people talk about gay icons, it's always Barbra, Judy, and Cher...what about the women we women go crazy for? Ya know, like...

The Indigo Girls
Melissa Etheridge
Ani DiFranco
Dar Williams
Ellen
Rosie

...and many more which hopefully others will think of now that I got the topic going...

134. The support they have for our community...
..But I am a rather rare beast in the Gay Community, I am a METALHEAD and I find Rob Halford (Juda Priest) to be more 'Iconic' for me..

There should be no question as to why she's a gay icon. She is the high priestess of camp after all.

154. Similar question
Since we're already on the path of divas, being a straight guy who loves metal, what's the general consensus on Heavy Metal with gays?
