face it folks- we are TOTALLY screwed...
as a society, we are NOWHERE NEAR being ready to face the double whammy of peak oil and global warming.
at a time when our usage and emissions need to be going down, or at the very least held in check- they just keep increasing...as does the population of the planet. the longer we wait, the worse the effects are going to be.

it's obvious that our elected representatives from EITHER party are not up to the task nor the responsibility- they are BEHOLDEN to corporate interests above all else- even our planet's well-being.

it's going to start to be an interesting ride over the next decade or so.

11. LOL - The Screwer has screwn the screwed...
We are the screwed that have been screwn by the screwer.

Now for the Tri-fecta:

Global warming

Peak oil

Collapse of the US dollar/economy

I don't know when or if it will happen but I've been hearing "unsustainable" regarding these three for years, and it's probably just a matter of time.

Here's Tom with the weather.............

2. Is it really up to "our elected representatives" to ensure that we don't kill ourselves?
There comes a time when we must act responsibly without a law demanding it. This would be a good time.

3. This is why I am on a 10 year plan
To save enough money to buy me a nice 38foot sailboat and hit the high seas before it all comes to a head. I am gonna get the hell out of dodge.

12. you would be suprised at the cruising community
there are already convoys of boats that sail in packs. There are virtual towns of boats moored out in the middle of nowhere like floating neighborhoods.

This guy is a poster over at the oil drum that sailed from UK to Australia with his family:

He has a downloadable e-book about getting a boat ready for a long cruise that I think I will get.

Good luck with your dream and welcome to DU

8.  I have already come to the conclusion
Edited on Mon Jun-18-07 03:52 PM by blues90
That people or the government are not willing to sacifice anything and will continue to stay with their wars and population growth and polluting to globe . China has already added alot of cars and seem willing to continue to do so .

So we will see as we begin to heat up either by global warming or a nuclear war .

I don't have many years left and did my best to conserve but it takes everyone to wake up and we may have already passed the point of no return .

More wars are breaking out everyday , people just want to spread death so in the end we get just want we put our efforts into .

it's obvious that we aren't going to change our societal ways until long past the time we actually do hit it.

21. Things can be done now...
Edited on Mon Jun-18-07 04:54 PM by HypnoToad
For instance, I replaced a 27" CRT TV set with a 32" LCD set. The LCD set uses 1/3rd the power, generates much less heat, weighs less, looks better. It's win-win.

Of course, most Americans treat electricity like diet food. As they buy "low fat food with 1/3rd the fat", they'll eat 3 times as much and think it's okay... (I don't; which is why I didn't buy three LCDs to replace the one CRT... I know better.)

Or maybe there is no future, so we should enjoy life for each day we've got?

22.  I'm not looking at the future
If it is anything like the last decade where everything has wound up to warp speed with the high tech age pushing the limits which sort of crowds out humanity and community as we once knew it .

I feel people need to slow things down where one can think and function instead of the instant gratification ideals .

This is one main reason we are where we are now . Some may enjoy this pressure cooker , I for one don't .

13. We run out of oil and gas we will deplete the coal reserves.
When that is gone, the forests will be destroyed. Peat bogs will be mined. Biomass will be used but that will cause food shortages and strip the soil of nutrients.

26. Then we have to accept the future for better or worse. I believe it is called
"radical acceptance".

Regardless, these doom and gloom threads are not merely empty hype, they are paralyzing people from living and life right now. And that's what we mustn't forget either.

We can't control other people.

We CAN control ourselves.

it's going to be interesting, to say the least, over the next decade or two.

or- in just half a decade, it may turn out that those ancient mayan calendar-makers really knew their shit.
