By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Editor

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Making human-animal embryos for scientific experiments should be allowed because of the benefits to science and medicine, British experts said in a report released for Sunday.

Such embryos should never, however, be implanted into either a woman or an animal, said the Academy of Medical Sciences.

The combinations would include animal eggs and the nucleus, containing the genetic material, of a human being, or human embryos that carry the genetic material of an animal, the independent advisory body said.

I am wonder if the Minotaur/Centaur Coalition is going to back this...

18. Actually, no, we got them the old fashioned way...
...privilege without obligation, power and position without accounability, and pure steaming arrogance.

4. This is misleading
There are already things similar to this. Transgenic mice have human genes inserted in them to make them succeptible to human diseases like HIV, so they can be used as disease models. This is one of these cases where the science is pretty accepted and practiced but sounds much worse than it really is. We are talking about chimeric cells in a petri dish ONLY...

but there is always someone eho will try to take things a step further. I have some scuples, and while I don't believe that honest scientists would even contemplate such things as attempting to create some inter-species creature, someone will.

I don't think this is such a good thing, but others might disagree ...one thing is for sure, some bonehead WILL try to create a new species, that is a given...

10. I admit its really creepy sounding...
and I was uneasy at first with it...but if it can forward stem cell research AND is done in a responsible way, then I think its a positive.

11. Most of the rest of the industrial world is already working on
stem cell research, and I believe we should have a hand in it as well. But as long as this Dark Age mentality is prevalent, we are going tobe losers in the race. We have so much technology and foresight, and yet, some moronic jerks have some absurd notion that a clump of cells is somehow a living damn near breathing human being.

Not long ago, a zealot told me that a sperm and an egg each have "half a soul", and then tried desperately to convince me of that. At that point, this guy could have told me the sky was blue, but I would have gone out to check it myself. Then there is the whole, "there is no gravity crowd...I guess they've never cleaned gutters on a creaky ladder like I have, and have found out the hard way that gravity does indeed exist, so does the hard ground.

Anyway, I'm all for science, and this does sound really creepy, but I think there indeed are limits. I think someone will try to create some kind of new "species", and I feel for whatever comes out of it, if anything...:scared:

9. First time I heard of this was during a mrbush State of the Union address
He slipped a sentence about "animal-human hybrids" into his speech, was a wtf? moment. I can't remember if it was the same SOTU speech where he did a 1-off on switch grass. I wonder how they compromise on what gets into those speeches.

the college the next day all had the same reaction...a wtf moment...:D

It was a quick one sentence thing that just caught everyone by surprise. I theorized that someone had a pic of him and a sheep, and he was just getting into a defensive position. I think he could have said he was going to nuke the North pole right after that sentence, and no one would have heard him...:D

Funny though, the man is so bat-shit crazy, not one peep came out about that that night or the next day, it is kind of eerie when something like that isn't reported on and examined...the press must have been seriously baffled...

used something that was more easily understood. I guess he was trying to sound like a botanist, but he came off like a complete idiot. If he was smart, he would have used kudzu as somehing that would make ethanol...everyone would be in favor of that!...

on edit:

SWITCH GRASS: Is a native, perennial warm season grass used for forage, slow to establish and fast growing up to 2-6 ft. As with a lot of our native plants it was depleted from over usage, burning, and land clearing for farming. Renewed interest in this grass is on the rise again.

15. My concern was that perhaps he actually knew what he was talking about & I didn't
Edited on Tue Jun-19-07 12:35 AM by uppityperson
Then I figured out that speech writers made him put keep it in for some reason. I don't think I have heard about animal-human hybrids or switch grass since. At least not from him. DUers had fun with it though.

Goodies from the archives on animal-human hybrids. Hear they get great mileage.

"My concern was that perhaps he actually knew what he was talking about & I didn't"...yeah, like that's gonna happen...

As intellectually incurious as this bonehead is, he needs a speech maker to write "good morning", and then he screws it up anyway...:D

17. I always figured that he heard about the transgenic mice thing..
and not understanding the science at all (sometimes I think he believes nature runs on "magic" to his mind) wanted to use it a scare tactic on how bad and corrupt science is (I believe that this was when the cloning issue of Dolly the sheep was big) since after all he is terribly allergic to the truth and science does at least TRY to find the truth. Scare tactics are a favorite of his afterall..I am sure the moron did not expect to get mocked...

As for the new species fears you have rasputin..there is someways that science is limited by nature, and any cross breed species will be sterile...Man has managed to cross breed species in nature to produce sterile hybrids after all...mules (donkey+horse) and Ligers (lions +tigers) so in a sense nature has its limits on how far man can push science.
