The serious right-wingers would HATE my novels. I don't treat fanatics kindly. Plus I populate my novels with all sorts of monsters and pagan gods (though they're not gods, really--they just play them in history).

Monsters are the good guys, religious fanatics (often) either the bad guys or simply the foils of the bad guys. It works for me.

I'd like to be a beloved fantasy author, but I wouldn't minded being hated by their side. It seems to me I remember a quote saying that you could judge a person as easily by their enemies as by their friends.

I can live with that.

I'm no utopian. The future I write about isn't free of friction, by a long shot. Some of the alternate Earths I propose are nastier than this one in many respects. But, in the end, my stuff is about humanity--what it truly means to be human and how just standing for what's right can make all sorts of differences in the lives of others.

It's not preachy. It's adventure, romance, science fiction, and fantasy. Gods, monsters, aliens, and superheroes. But it's also about people.

The way I see it, the fanatics are more than welcome to buy and burn as many copies of my books as they want.

Worked for J.K. Rowling, after all.

And it's not as though I even aspire to be a billionaire like her. Ain't no grand castles on my shopping list.
