Vatican's 10 Commandments for drivers

By NICOLE WINFIELD, Associated Press Writer 2 hours, 44 minutes ago
VATICAN CITY - The Vatican on Tuesday issued a set of "Ten Commandments" for drivers, telling motorists not to kill, not to drink and drive, and to help fellow travelers in case of accidents.

An unusual document from the Vatican's office for migrants and itinerant people also warned that cars can be "an occasion of sin" — particularly when they are used for dangerous passing or for prostitution.

It warned about the effects of road rage, saying driving can bring out "primitive" behavior in motorists, including "impoliteness, rude gestures, cursing, blasphemy, loss of sense of responsibility or deliberate infringement of the highway code."

It urged motorists to obey traffic regulations, drive with a moral sense, and to pray when behind the wheel.

Cardinal Renato Martino, who heads the office, told a news conference that the Vatican felt it necessary to address the pastoral needs of motorists because driving had become such a big part of contemporary life.....

The "Drivers' Ten Commandments," as listed by the document, are:

1. You shall not kill.

2. The road shall be for you a means of communion between people and not of mortal harm.

3. Courtesy, uprightness and prudence will help you deal with unforeseen events.

4. Be charitable and help your neighbor in need, especially victims of accidents.

5. Cars shall not be for you an expression of power and domination, and an occasion of sin.

6. Charitably convince the young and not so young not to drive when they are not in a fitting condition to do so.

7. Support the families of accident victims.

8. Bring guilty motorists and their victims together, at the appropriate time, so that they can undergo the liberating experience of forgiveness.

9. On the road, protect the more vulnerable party.

10. Feel responsible toward others.

:( Sorry World, many of us Catholics wish that our blessed Bishops would have selected more wisely.

4. I'm with ya on that. I can't even call him Benedict (until he says something well or good.)
I thought it hilarious that the pope is trying to control driving habits. I wonder if he almost got run over in Italy somewhere. Probably yearning for that old Autobahn and rule following Germans.

It's just sad. :( However, I feel blessed to be a member of a liberal Parish. Of course everyone is respectful - but we have our priorities straight. Best Wishes :hi:

10. It's like managers who can't solve real problems at work so they pick on the number of pens you use
or markers or staples.

I guess even the Pope can't touch the real issues.

16. LOL It's funny but they actually think that they are helping us worker bees.
A member of my Platoon died while skin diving of a brain aneurysm. Therefore, my Company Commander, in his infinite wisdom announced that: "Due to this tragic accident, 'water proofing' will be mandatory for the next training cycle."

I immediately bit my tongue but wanted to quip, "Hey Captain?!? I don't think any amount of swim training would have extracted Sergeant X from of his imminent meeting with Saint Peter." :eyes:

Our blessed Leaders? Often they are only good for a belly-laugh and a scratch on the head. ;)

Usually they end up causing more trouble with their "solutions". But it has always been this way, I guess....

26. Personally, I call him Maladict
"Benedict" is from Latin bene dictere, "to speak well," which is the root phrase for "benediction." "Maladict" would be related to Latin male dictere, "to speak evilly", which definitely fits with the current Pontiff's proclamations.

6. I remember reading that Pope Paul IV issued a ruling about driving
Edited on Tue Jun-19-07 10:37 AM by TechBear_Seattle
Probably an apocryphal story, but supposedly there was a Vatican ruling in the late 60s which declared it a venial sin to speed, run stop signs or otherwise break traffic laws.

Added: I read the article. Basically a restatement of the ruling mentioned above, nothing new.

There has to be a Jesuit around who could tell us. :)

12. LOL!!
It might even be a sin to say a "Hail Mary" to protect you when you go (sinfully) through a stop sign. That will double your Hail Mary's, I'll bet, and the priest'll throw in an "Our Father" and a "Glory Be" just to make sure you don't do it again. :)

17. "Cars shall not be for you ... an occasion of sin."
Didn't the phrase "Rock and Roll" come from car-related sin?

Someone make some jokes, I'm at a loss here. Perhaps it's because I'm remembering all of my sins...be with you in a few minutes.

21. If people followed these rules the world would be a better place. Driving has
become a total nightmare over the last few years and its getting wilder and angrier every day. In the city they are insane, angry speeders and in the country ditto the former plus crazed tailgaters.

If everyone were only more charitable, supportive, helpful and responsible in all areas of their lives, let alone driving, the world would be a much better place.

25. Yes they are and they are written MANY places. The thought of all the horrific
cruelties done by human kind makes many of us Catholics wonder why "God's Emissary On Earth" is focusing on Traffic Commandments :wow: ... other than just basically stating the obvious "be courteous" and "do unto others" type Parables?

The thought of him dictating *Traffic Commandments* is ONE of the most bizarro publications that Our Blessed Leader (of The World's Catholic Community) needs to be spending time on. That's why IMO, it's so sad, ... so utterly pathetic, ... well, it's borderline hilarious due to absurdity.

"He's flagging down sinful speeders and fighting horn-honking crimes! He's ... The Pope!?!"

Meanwhile, What about Ethiopia? ... the Gaza Strip? ... Sudan? ... Iraq? ... Afghanistan? etc. :(
