As PZ Myers points out, the East-West split is peculiar. Anyone have on theories on what that's about?

4. Me too
I live in the DC area. All the beautiful interesting single women I've known as friends colleagues and co-workers in my day around here - none of them married.

Women who move to the DC area from other places say, "You'll never have a meaningful relationship as long as you live here".

34. I got's the same problems here in Central OH
Most are married, (miserably), because they are in love with the "idea" of marriage, or they are dating the tool they are about to marry and spend the next 3 to 7 years with. Or they are divorced and only want a relationship with their cat now, add kids and baggage to that equation, and NO thanks... The divorce attorneys are cleaning up around here.

16. Well, they're not dating me
I'm a man in the Philly area, home to a big orange dot (i.e., a male shortage). And every gal from the DC area I've been after (four of them since 1990) found somebody else, so somebody is getting all that action.

I think the overall problem is that people don't like each other very much anymore. Specific cases are harder to figure out, but according to pop psychology, in my case, it's because I'm no damn good. }(

I do notice that a lot of people of both genders have impossibly high "standards" -- and not necessarily in terms of looks.

3. Is there a reason why the single men are mostly in the western half
...of the U.S. while the single women are in the eastern half of the country? Is this another Christian fundy plan for total sexual abstinence?

31. dead serious
i live in california, i SEE this....every day. it's not a statement of prejudice, i don't care one way or the other, so don't think that i'm jumping on the immigration bandwagon, cause i'm not. california depends upon mexican workers, of which men make up the bulk, and that's a fact.

are skewing the results;

B) you think CALIFORNIA is the only place "immigrants" go? Been to NC lately? Or anywhere else there are a lot of crops to be picked?

20. It's funny that
I was living in Austin, TX as a kid up to my early 20's and had a few friends there who moved out to Cali "because it was full of babes."

Apparently they were not the only guys thinking that.

21. It seems to confirm my impression that capitol cities tend to attract women.
Just looking at Sacratomato, Olympia, and Salem seem to bear out that impression.

22. does the map differentiate by age?
Or is it lumping all ages together? Not a meaningful result for a guy under 35 if many of the single women on that map are widows over age 70.

29. I can only speak for DC
but there does seem to be an abundance of youngish (mid 20's to mid 30's) single women in this city. A lot of them are "career minded" and are not at the stage of their life yet where they start to think about getting married...which is nice, because I'm not either.

I'd imagine it has a lot to do with how the local area see's single people (and single women in particular). I was down in San Antonio, TX during Cinco de Mayo and there were a TON of bachelorette parties going on. At the restaurant we went to before hitting the bars there were five separate bachlorette parties going on. I talked to one bride-to-be who was 23 and she said she was attending something like eight weddings that summer.

Austin is a pretty progressive town (generally the only blue county in Texas) but in many area of the state it's "strange" for women over the age of 30 not to be married, where as in DC, it's pretty common.

38. Reminds me of one town
where I often here statistics about how many more single women there are than men. The problem for me as a young man is that most of the single women there are over 30 and divorced with at least one child.

the numbers work out in my favor and i'm still below the mendoza line...FWIW i did have decent success when i was in college in atlanta, but i've lived in washington and new england with nearly zero success (as an aside, i found the women in washington to be pretty materialistic, and in many cases, i was looked down upon for being in such a low-paying job...ymmv)
