Bush to veto stem cell bill
Edited on Wed Jun-20-07 08:14 AM by EV_Ares
President Bush surrounded himself with children born from frozen embryos when he vetoed the stem-cell bill in July 2006, saying it crossed a "moral boundary."

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush has chosen to use his veto pen three times — twice on the stem cell issue where politics, ethics and science collide.
Pushing back against the Democratic-led Congress, Bush plans to veto a bill Wednesday that would have eased restraints on federally funded embryonic stem cell research, White House spokesman Tony Fratto said.

At the same time, Bush will issue an executive order directing the Health and Human Services Department to promote research into cells that, like human embryonic stem cells, also hold the potential of regenerating into different types of cells that might be used to battle disease.

Democrats made the stem cell legislation Bush promised to veto a top priority when they took control of the House and Senate in January. They do not, however, have enough votes to override a veto.

In his veto threat, the president accused Democrats of recycling an old measure that he already vetoed and argued that the bill would mean American taxpayers would — for the first time — be compelled to support the deliberate destruction of human embryos.

"The president supports and encourages stem cell research, including using embryonic lines, as long as it does not involve creating, harming or destroying embryos," Fratto said. "That is an ethical line that should not be crossed."

13. Yeah it's a pretty pathetic statement about how much our government values science and progress...

2. Yeah...
Wouldn't want take away from the possibility of more cannon fodder now would we?

I saw this headline this morning and my blood pressure probably jumped 50 points (not that I expected him to sign). I can't think of a single person who's done more damage--and the scary thing is, he manages to do damage both by doing and, in this case, not doing.

I hate this man.

3. I doubted that I could dislike the president

more than I have. This takes the cake. Like he gives a shit about people. This is so important to people who can hope for at least minimizing their illness. A pox on his house. Lets make sure that we put in a Democratic house and senate in 08 plus the White House.

4. You know, you would think the people would think as you do, we need
better and more dems in office where you can override these veto's. Also,by now, you would think with everything that has happened there would be cries for impeachment from this country. My god, a great 8 years with Clinton and a made up fiasco bunch of charges and millions and millions of taxpayer money spent trying to get him and nothing on GWB.

5. I want to know
what Dem Senators voted against this bill. I hope to have time this afternoon to search.

How does Bush feel about all the frozen embryos that are THROWN OUT after a certain amount of time. Why isn't he demanding legislation to not allow this? He is a fucking hypocrite and I hate to say this, but I hope I live long enough to see him in a wheelchair with Parkinsons like 3 people in my immediate family have been. I don't want him to have Alzheimers because I want him to know he has Parkinsons and I want him to be aware he is suffering.

Don't flame me for my hatred. This is a personal issue. And the Senators who voted against this and won't vote to override I wish the same.

6. Only Casey and Nelson voted against, many Republicans crossed
the aisle (including mine--McCAIN?!) to vote yes.

63 yeas, 34 nays--just a hair short of a veto-proof vote (sigh...)

7. Three Democrats didn't vote.
If they showed up for the override vote, would that not be enough?

11. It would have, but Bush would have vetoed anyway. I dwouldn't expect
Landrieu or Johnson to have voted for it anyway. I could be wrong, but my guess is they would have voted no.

19. Not to mention research that is happening in the private sector
Since this is such a moral issue, where's the legislation to ban it across the board in both the public and private sectors? Oh, and did/do any of those children have siblings that were tossed away?

8. I am so upset at the democrats who are complaining
that the democratic congress is doing nothing. How do you think they feel. They are working together to get bills passed that benefit the people of this country. As soon as they get the bill to bush's desk he VETOES it.Why because in most cases he wants to try to show the country that he is still in charge and that the democrats are ineffective and he is doing a damn good job. Instead of putting pressure on their republican members in congress, the people are slamming the democrats because the bills aren't passed. It is not their fault. The senate is the cause and we should all get out there and spread the news that the republicans are obstructionist....yes they are the obstructionist. They are trying to ruin the middle class in this country. We have to get the message out, the republican owned press won't.

15. He splits hairs again
No taxpayer dollars to keep the fundienuts complacent, but big business...you go right ahead and do whatever! :banghead:

And they're not embryos ferchrissake!!! They're blastocysts that will be tossed in the trash (read: scheduled to destroy). :grr:

That's the thing that bugs me the most about this...He's not being honest!! If it's "not moral", then ban it across the board. (period) It's completely disingenuous to claim Oh! the horror!, while at the same time allow it to take place in the private sector.
