U.S. military cites Green Zone attacks

By LAUREN FRAYER, Associated Press Writer 2 hours, 44 minutes ago

BAGHDAD - The U.S. military acknowledged "an increasing pattern of attacks" against the Green Zone, a day after a mortar barrage against the heavily fortified area sent soldiers and contractors scrambling for cover.

Militants fired a volley of mortar rounds into the Green Zone, which houses the U.S. and British embassies, as well as the Iraqi government on the west bank of the Tigris River, officials said. The U.S. Embassy said no casualties were reported, but the attack was the latest in what has become a nearly daily occurrence despite stringent security measures aimed at protecting the area.

Rear Adm. Mark Fox, a U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad, declined to provide details on the number of attacks against the Green Zone, which is also known as the International Zone, but said they were increasing.

"It's clear that there is an attempt to get lucky shots, and there is unquestionably an increasing pattern of attacks here against the International Zone. There's no doubt about that," Fox said at a joint news conference with Iraqi military spokesman Qassim al-Moussawi.

1. Looks like the insurgents have a "surge" plan of their own.

2. More signs of a "failing insurgency" as Hillary described them.

3. It was reported yesterday that we only control about 40% of
Baghdad but I can't remember the outlet. It was either on PBS or Link because I don't watch the corporate shows.

4. The "Tet" offensive is coming kids
and Bush has served our army up in a nice seige situation for them. Good thing we don't have to ship food in on wagons these days at least.

6. Let's see... the Green Zone is immobile, our troops are there, insurgents are looking for a target
I wonder if the insurgents will figure out that the Green Zone is a sitting duck?

It does not take a genius to figure out that they are probing the Green Zone for weaknesses and responses to attacks.

As the linked article pointed out there is 'an increasing pattern of attacks' and they have "...become a nearly daily occurence despite stringent security measures aimed at protecting the area."
