Edwards '08: Talking Tough

Please read this excerpt and see if you feel the same way I do.

Snip>>>

...And Edwards has decided to sell America on sacrifice.

"I am totally comfortable with the word sacrifice, with asking people to sacrifice for their country," he said.

Among the sacrifices:

To reduce carbon emissions, Edwards recognizes that people may have to pay more for gasoline. And he is not ruling out new taxes or increasing old ones.

The universal health care plan he wants is going to be expensive and some people will have to pay more.
Eradicating poverty, his signature issue, will also require more money from taxpayers.

And Edwards does not favor any new tax cuts for the middle-class.

Isn't there a risk in asking voters to sacrifice while other candidates are promising them things? I asked him.
"There is clearly a political risk, no question," he said. "But I actually believe this is what America needs."

And he is going to find out how many people agree with him.

... Don’t you wish Edwards would’ve said something like... big oil will have to start spending some of their profits on improving their product so it wouldn’t be so harmful to us.

...And maybe instead of promising not to give new tax cuts to the middle class, maybe he could have said, he would start taxing corporations who profit from shipping our jobs over seas.

5. Thank you for that. I'm glad I got a chance to read Edwards trying
to explain himself on his Iran rhetoric.

4. The Media is frequently pointing
out that we have a war and no one has been asked to
sacrifice except Middle Class. Their Sons and Daugters
are the Military fighting the war and their tax money
is being used to pay for the war.

The Upper Classes have substanial taxcuts. Unrealistic
Policy. Cut Taxes and borrow to pay for the war.

This may not be very popular, but I believe a war worth
fighting is worth paying for and Wars call for sacrifice
from all of its citizens. In WWII there was a War Tax.
UpperClass Kids fought alongside very poor kids.
We had a unified country. Sure Republicans hated
FDR but the American people were unified.
No, I am not calling for a draft--just pointing out
shared sacrifice has a unifying effect.

If we ever extricate ourselves from Iraq, I wish
we could force whomever is President to call for
a War Tax. If they have to raise taxes they will
think long and hard about war.

All of our Candidates promised Taxcuts to the Middle
Class the last election. Edwards is in line with the
Party on this.
