URGENT: Contact the U.S. House Judiciary Committee and Ask for Impeachment of Cheney and Bush

1. Email Them All
You can Email Speaker Pelosi and all of the Judiciary Committee Members for whom we have identified good Email addresses all at once by signing this petition:

2. Phone and Email Them

Your message can be as simple as "Please impeach Cheney" or "Please support and cosponsor Congressman Kucinich's proposal to begin impeachment proceedings against Vice President Cheney."

You can quote John Conyers from John Nichols' book (pointed out by attentive reader Gordon Bennett): "I have a choice. I can either stand by and lead my constituents to believe I do not care that the president apparently no longer believes he is bound by any law or code of decency. Or I can act."

You can point to the Vermont Senate which passed a resolution on April 20, 2007, requesting impeachment. It is UNPRECEDENTED for Congress to ignore an impeachment request coming from a legislative body. It would be terrible for Congress to break this long-established precedent. When the Florida legislature requested the impeachment of Judge Swayne, Congress acted upon it. It came to the floor of the House as a highly privileged motion. The House required a committee to report on impeachment. When the committee reported it, impeachment was passed. When the Mississippi legislature requested the impeachment of Judge Bruin, Congress acted upon it. It came to the floor of the House as a highly privileged motion. The House required a committee to report on impeachment. Shortly later, a new judge was appointed, apparently after Judge Bruin died or resigned.

Don't forget Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi:

3. Write to them

Print out this sheet of addresses (thanks, Gordon), stick them to cards or envelopes, and write to them.

Print out postcards to mail to Congress Members.

3. citing the Vermont resolution is a good way to embarass yourself
Before you cite the Vermont legislature, you might want to consider that the Vermont House rejected the impeachment resolution. The idea that the Swayne case (where both houses of the Florida legislature passed a resolution that was then transmitted to Congress under the signature of the FLorida Secretary of State) somehow creates a precedent for moving on an impeachment resolution passed by only one house of a bi-cameral state legislature is pretty ridiculous on its face.

I think its great when people call their representatives and other party leaders and advocate for impeachment. Just don't do it in a way that makes you look stupid.

4. It says the Vermont "Senate" approved one, and they did. Is that not
considered a legislative body?

http://www.cabinet.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070615/HOLLISBROOKLINE01/70615012/-1/hollisbrookline01

Impeachment resolutions have been proposed to legislatures in 11 states this year. None of them have passed. The Vermont Senate approved one in April but the state’s House of Representatives rejected it a few weeks later.

5. there is no precedent for treating a resolution passed by one house and rejected by another
as a valid basis for starting an impeachment proceeding. The precedent cited, from Florida, invovled a resolution passed by both houses of the Florida legislature. Given that very few if any actions by one body of a bicameral legislature is of any effect without action by the other body, the suggestion being made in the material cited in the OP that long standing precedent requires Congress to take action based on the Vermont action is dubious on its face and thus not helpful in making the case for impeachment. Don't use an argument that gives someone an excuse not to act.

6. If they don't pass this to the full house...
I think you can kiss this party officially goodbye.

It's all on principle and what the hell you're going to stand up for.

Another DUer made a good point earlier...if Cheney is under the heat...he can't possibly attack Iran.
