Poll question: Are you PREPARED?
Edited on Wed Jun-20-07 09:54 PM by garybeck
According to a new peer reviewed scientific study, intense climate change is coming and it's too late to stop it:

The Earth today stands in imminent peril

...and nothing short of a planetary rescue will save it from the environmental cataclysm of dangerous climate change. Those are not the words of eco-warriors but the considered opinion of a group of eminent scientists writing in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

By Steve Connor, Science Editor
Published: 19 June 2007

Six scientists from some of the leading scientific institutions in the United States have issued what amounts to an unambiguous warning to the world: civilisation itself is threatened by global warming.

They also implicitly criticise the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for underestimating the scale of sea-level rises this century as a result of melting glaciers and polar ice sheets.

http://environment.independent.co.uk/climate_change/article2675747.ece

Whether incremental global warming/climate change, a random isolated weather problem, earthquake, another terrorist attack, or economic calamity that could turn things upside down, it seems reasonable we should all have a preparedness kit and an idea of what to do if things get bad.

ARE YOU PREPARED?

please comment on your preparedness in addition to voting, to keep this kicked. it's important.

7. Satire usually is trying to make a point.
Your attack was pointless and personal. Just saying something is bad and calling someone a name illustrates nothing. That is not satire.

4. Oh, yes...I live in south Mississippi
Hurricane Katrina was lesson enough. I could survive for a month or more with the stuff I've accumulated.

6. I lived through Hurricane Betsy
I've been prepared since '65.

We do not have to run around for last minute shopping when somethings out there in the Gulf. We always have a supply of canned goods, batteries, water, first aid kit as well as the axe in the attic. I also keep the two cat containers right outside of my bedroom door on the deck.
And, we bought a couple of bikes after Katrina.

We also have a well and we grow vegetables.

I guess I can say we are somewhat prepared.

8. And a kit in my car in case I'm out of walking distance
Fixed that up late Sept 2005. My family thinks it is silly but I don't. You will probably be on your own, unless you are in a large city in which case you will be on your own with a lot of competition.

9. Yes. More than "supplies", I have knowledge and SKILLS.
In a real "complete system collapse" situation, how
long will your basement full of canned goods keep you alive?

BOOKS, people- you need to stockpile BOOKS for the "just in case" scenarios.

Canned food and water will keep you alive for months...but only INFORMATION
will keep you alive for a lifetime.

12. seeds
need to be non-hybrid so they can produce more seeds. they are pretty hard to find as most seeds are hybrids and produce plants whose seeds are non-viable. also they should be kept in an airtight container

Edited on Thu Jun-21-07 12:00 AM by uppityperson
For total long time survival, have med issues that will kill me in a couple months so all my books will be sitting, moldering. Need tools also. And medical supplies with a basic book like "where there is no doctor" or even a first aid thingy.

24. Cash also. Coins, dollars.
In our rural area I expect local checks to be ok, but wouldn't want to be reliant on them totally here or elsewhere.

much "barter" will largely be "theft."

if you had resources, you'd more than likely would need to be able to protect them.

I live in tornado alley. We also have ice storms in the winter that knock out power. I'm always prepared.

I have enough supplies to last 6 months. Plus the skills to get more if needed.

That comes from being employed as a seasonal worker years ago. I learned early to save for the lean months. It sure came in handy during layoffs or unpaid sick days. I don't have to worry about that now but old habits are hard to break.

16. Preparedness is important for any eventuality.

I live in a place where tornadoes can happen. They usually blow over us, and then blow the crap out of the people in the plains. But we get blizzards that shut the whole city down for days, etc.

I have more to do, but I'm on the case.

Step 2: Get a month's food supply.
Step 3: Get the materials to be able to create an even longer supply.
Step 4: Start making one for my family members since they'll never do it.

sound like a snow storm or something. Canned goods are not going to help you survive Climate Change.

Does this mean I should stock up on duct tape and plastic again ?

28. I wouldn't know where to go with that full tank of gas
I now have enough cans and bottled water to last maybe 3 or 4 weeks, with rationing. But I assume by the article on imminent global peril that you're talking about something far worse. A catastrophe big enough to disrupt food and water for more than a few weeks is probably one of a magnitude that could potentially be open-ended.

I live on an ant hill in Southern California with millions of ants. If I locked myself indoors with my canned food and flashlights, I guess I could board up the windows and hope no one breaks in, but how long would the cans and batteries last if civilization were suspended for any length of time? If I decided to fight my way through tens of millions of cars fleeing the area, I have no idea where I could go. I guess there are quite a number of small ghost towns out in the desert, especially where route 66 used to run. But they generally no longer have running water or electricity and they are dozens of miles from stores or supplies. When I was young, I used to go caving with a friend in the high Sierra who also practiced going into the woods as a sort of week-end survivalist. I'm not sure though I could take the cold and hunger while living in a lean-to in the mountains. Either way (staying or leaving) I think it would be just a matter of time before my goose would be cooked, if it was a serious disruption or catastrophe. Maybe if I was used to a more primitive lifestyle such as the ones people had generations ago, growing or catching food, I might be able to survive. I'd probably need a primitive rifle and the knowledge of making my own gunpowder and bullets, to shoot at game. But I have no primitive survival skills whatsoever. And with 20 or 30 million Californians out in the desert or the mountains hunting for food, the game probably wouldn't last.
