Angry Newsom blasts Daly for bringing politics to a 'new low'

Mayor Gavin Newsom (San Francisco) categorically denied ever using cocaine Wednesday and blasted Supervisor Chris Daly for raising the allegation during a packed Board of Supervisors meeting a day earlier, saying his City Hall archenemy had brought San Francisco politics to a new low.

Daly, a former housing-rights activist who is loved by some for being a passionate advocate and disdained by others for having a heated temper, raised the allegations during an impassioned speech Tuesday at a board hearing on $6 million in proposed cuts by the mayor's office to next year's Department of Public Health budget. :puke:

It's hardly the first time Daly, 34, has been at the center of City Hall controversy. In 2004, he escaped censure by an 8-2 vote. The push came from Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier after he had told the audience at a board committee meeting to "f- off" and walked out.++

SAN FRANCISCO Supervisor Chris Daly has never recognized the boundaries of civility in politics. There's not enough space on this page to recount all the tantrums, boorish outbursts and political shenanigans that make the word "progressive" a joke when applied to him. His November election-night party -- with him and supporters chortling on stage as his wife led profane chants against his adversaries -- was a classic show of gracelessness in victory. He has been known to respond to the public's e-mail inquiries with stinging insults.
