> Bombay is better, though.

Mr. Tesha disagrees with you. He recently did a direct
blind taste test between Tanqueray (his usual gin) and
Bombay. Not only did he correctly identify the Tanq but
he also had strong opinions about which gin was better.

IIRC, he thought the Bombay was "smokey/oily" tasting
versus the Tanq being "spicey/savory".

BTW, the NYTimes recently had a lengthy article comparing
various "name" gins:

208. Someone did say to me DU has plenty of Republican trolls.
If only 74% maintain membership in the Democratic Party then that leaves plenty of room for Republican trolls here. While these people don't say they support Republicans in a message they do tend to disrupt threads calling for activism with disparaging remarks or remarks that say oh that activity won't work, etc.

Edited on Thu Jun-21-07 07:10 PM by tbyg52
And I *don't* like Tanqueray. No need to do a blind test.

Edited to say: I wonder if they tested it with regular Bombay, or *Sapphire*? There's a HUGH difference.

Grey Goose is downright icky. I bought *one* bottle for the pretty glass that came with it, and threw it out after one sip.

Edited to say: Oh, wait, that's vodka, isn't it? It's still icky. And it's expensive too. I like Stoli. It's expensive, but it's worth it.

Edited on Thu Jun-21-07 06:27 PM by smoogatz
That's what really strikes me about this survey--how much we look like "average" America. We're whiter, older, somewhat more affluent, way more suburban, somewhat better educated, and considerably less religious than the "mainstream" is alleged to be--but what we're not is some kind of loony fringe. We're solidly middle-of-the-road in just about every respect. Which tells you something about how out of whack the media perception of liberals--and the center in American politics--really is.

I drive a Ford, but, based on the sanctimonious comments from some around here (Note: not everyone who drives a hybrid acts sanctimonious, but some of you do. :) ) I would have assumed Toyota to be the No. 1.

I'm secretly pleased that we drive so many Fords. ;)

And watching the efforts made on DU to learn how to have that conversation gives me a good deal of hope. It is really difficult at times, even depressing. But this community can be flexible and interested and damn, that's a great place to start. :)

Right now, we seem to have a lot of middle class professionals here, which at this point is disproportionately white in the US. But younger people tend to be more universally online regardless of race/ethinicity, so over time DU might become more mixed.

167. Internet activism is dominated by white middle-class folks
who have the money for a computer and internet connection, and the spare time needed to absorb all the available data.

It's good, this online community, but it's a fused loop. The politician who champions programs to place computers and internet connections in the inner cities and rural regions will have gone a long way towards changing the world.

I cannot imagine 15% of people here as members of the Independent party that includes as part of its mission:

"To identify and reverse legislation, case law, regulations, and treaties, etc., that are unconstitutional or an offense to God and our Founding Fathers."

"To greatly minimize taxes, and to limit the size, power, and function of government to the intended constraints established within the original Constitution and Bill of Rights."

144. The distributions ...
for gender, age, income, etc., all look pretty much as one might expected: a real range. It's the overwhelming whiteness that is surprising. I always suspected we're not all that representative. But it's more marked than I would have thought. We're not just nonrepresentative of, say, the Democratic Party but even the country as a whole. Keep that in mind any time we do an internal poll. It may tell us something about DU, but it probably isn't saying much about the nation as a whole. That would be especially true for polls of primary preferences, because primary voters have much larger blocks of minority voters.

146. Eew! 36% don't floss!
Actually, the graphs I looked at make the group as a whole look pretty well-heeled. That is actually what one would expect for politically active people. For whatever reason, the poor are not involved in the community and often don't vote. That also explains the racial bias. The internet is still a somewhat expensive and nerdy thing to do and whites are disproportionately represented in that group. I did notice that whatever our religions nominally, we are overwhelmingly secular in practice.

Obviously..DU'ers care more about "flossing" and keeping their teeth than "socializing" in BARS or having wine with dinner...

But, then, the survey seemed to show DU'ers as kind of isolated....anyway. Maybe there's NOTHING this GROUP would buy. Most are not religious and DU skews older which means cynicism...

154. The Questions about Alcohol Use and Religion from Marketing Survey Standards
Edited on Thu Jun-21-07 06:20 PM by KoKo01
were "odd." It seemed that the "Booze Industry" funded the study ..along with "National Council of Churches" and the "flossing" question meant that was a "marker" for "Health Conscience of Du'ERS.

So it would seem that this was a survey of a few companies to get the "drift" of what DU'ers are buying and using.

No QUESTIONS about Pet Health or Organics in the questions.

If I was marketing DU...I'd go for Organic, Med/Dental, Herbal/Wellness and NETFLEX as targets to look for BIG BUCKS ADVERTISERS!

 Just my view ...on this..for the 2 Cents.

205. The issues on this board are not reflective of the issues of the majority of the party
I can think of no better example than the religion threads. The majority group on this site (according to that poll) are atheists. Non-practicing believers are second.

However, again, blacks and Hispanics make up the majority of our primary voters in a lot of states. And those are two groups who are religious in rates higher than the population at large. So, the innumerable threads about the stupidity of religious people are actually an attack on our core constituencies. That's a disconnect, would you not say?

Also, the poll indicates that this site is made up of a large number of white suburbanites. The Party - as any voting analysis can show - is essentially an urban party at this point. I don't think that is as great a disconnect as the religion issue but it is interesting. And, again, it would probably reflect a failure to understand the issues of urbanites, particularly urban minorities (who are absolutely essential to Democratic electoral success at this point).

These are not complete thoughts, but I do think there is a disconnect when a website of white suburbanites discuss the issues of what is - by and large - an urban, multi-cultural party.

What is really interesting is that I imagine our demographics are probably not THAT far removed from Free Republic. I imagine everything is within five percent.

I have a question in my mind, though, about people who respond to polls and about people who are more likely to post OPs. Those are wild cards in evaluating DU as a group, imho.

But, I agree about us urban minority types being essential to winning elections -- and suspect that that's why the Thuggery targets us for voter suppression and election fraud.

209. Obviously, this is not scientific
But you would think that a site featuring Democrats would have more than 2% particpation amongst blacks regardless of the response level.

Urban minorities are absolutely essential for Democrats to win elections. Every few years, a Republican strategist will release a chart showing how gaining as little as an extra five percent of the black vote will sway election results. And everyone in the Republican Party agrees and tries to do some outreach. And then they say that America would have been better off with Strom Thurmond as President and everything collapses.

So, instead of gaining 5 percent they try to suppress 5 percent. It's all the same to them.

212. I find it hard to imagine that white, atheist suburbanites are the base of the Party
To be totally honest, the very fact that the numbers indicate that 52 percent of the site is white males shows me that this site is not the base of the Party. Bush won 60 percent of the white male vote in 2000 and 62 percent in 2004. As a white male, I recognize that I am not the typical Democratic voter. This site being majority white male indicates that it is not made up of typical Democratic voters.

I believe that DU does represent a large portion of the activists of the Party though.

I wish there had been a question about union membership. That would have been extremely interesting.

I think DUers, at least sometimes, consider us "the base" and expect elected to Dems to be responsive to us because of that.

But since we look so different from the primary voters, it puts who they need to please in a very different light.
