Texas Rangers with MLB approval has a horrible commercial out anti-working mothers
Edited on Thu Jun-21-07 03:13 PM by RGBolen
Two women in a grocery store. One in a business suit the other in some bright yellow sweater. Yellow sweater woman asks about the other's son driving. Woman in the suit tells her that her son is 10 years old. Yellow sweater woman disagrees and suit woman checks her PDA and says "oh he's 16, who knew." And then the tag line of "you could use some baseball."

So going by this if you see a woman in a business suit with a career you can just assume she doesn't know anything about her children because she has chosen to have a career instead.

1. You are absolutely right, RGBolen. But what I'm stuck on is,
Whatever does that possibly have to do with baseball?:wtf:

2. Not only offensive but pointless...
...giving the producer two on, in the ballgame of stupid commercials.

3. Are the commercials by MLB, or by Fox Sports?
I get the MLB package, and there are a lot of commercials that you see market by market (same commercial, different team names plugged in) that I think are produced by Fox Sports.

Not that I am excusing a commercial such as this by any means. But it could be a Fox thing.

I wouldn't know where to start, but you guys might. :)

10. Start with the Texas Rangers
Since it is apparently their campaign. I certainly have seen no such thing on either the Seattle or Detroit broadcasts, the ones I watch.

5. That Commercial Would Work Better, And. . .
. . .have been inoffensive (imo) if it had been two guys. The notion that some men let their families life pass by for their jobs is archetypal. That would have been inoffensive, i think.

9. Still sexist
Not fair in this day. Men are generally way more involved with their families than they were 50 years ago. It's just dumb all the way around.

11. Not Sexist. Maybe Stereotyping, But Not Sexist.
And, while what you say is true, i think it less offensive to draw on the male stereotype. Just my opinion.

22. Stereotyping Is Stereotyping
To me, all negative stereotyping is offensive.

I try not to stereotype anyone on the basis of gender, race, sexual orientation, age, nationality, or other factors.

I try to deal with people as individuals.

I do not appreciate it -- at all -- when I am stereotyped.

7. You need to fix the title of this - this is a Texas Rangers' ad campaign
~snip~

The Texas Rangers are pitching a new sentiment to fans this year. An ad campaign trumpeted by the phrase "You Could Use Some Baseball," has been plastered on billboards around town and featured in TV ads reminding fans how a day at the ballpark is always a memorable experience -- as opposed to other daily activities.

13. Given The Texas Rangers' won-lost record and
poor management of their team, they "could use some baseball."

8. Take your son to a ball game
single working mom.

I can't believe anybody who was targeting women could think this is a good idea. Unbelievable, way out of line.

14. Just goes to show
It just shows how far removed from regular people these big corporate marketing types really are. Not a frickin' clue that taking just oneself and two kids to a major league ballgame can be well over $100, a definite luxury and out of many people's reach altogether.

19. $100 Bucks Easy
I know someone who recently took his two boys, along with grandpa to a Cubs game. I admit they had really good seats, but when he was done, he spent almost 4 bills.

12. I'm a working mom and a baseball fan, and although I haven't seen the commercial
I don't find it offensive

I think it is meant to convey "you are working too hard, time for a break"

I think people have become too thin skinned. They are offended by everything.

Oh yeah...Go Red Sox!

18. It's just the portrayal of the bubbly stay at home mom knowing everything
and the working mom not knowing how old her son is.

I wasn't offended personally, my wife is never going to have to worry about remembering how old kids are. But I doubt there are many parents of either gender who work any amount of hours that are going to be 6 years off on their child's ages.

21. Most commercials are pretty dumb, so I don't put much stock in
them, but
I was just laughing at the Capital One Mortgage commercial

The woman is walking around with a monkey on her back, and the monkey is messing
up her hair and tossing around dishes.Very creative

Anyway once again Go Red Sox MLB TV is the bomb. I absolutely love the fact that I can see
out of market games and watch an archived game I missed.

17. Well if the present day family did not have to have two jobs
to survive, maybe the woman in the business suit could also be in a yellow sweater. And if the woman in the business suit made as much money as her male counterpart for the same job she wouldn't need to be away from home as long trying to make that extra dollar.

20. Have to have two jobs? You think that is why women work "outside of the home?"
Edited on Thu Jun-21-07 03:51 PM by RGBolen
The desire to provide for oneself and family, that isn't an acceptable reason? Wanting to build a career or business? You say that as if the norm is for two adults to only have one job.

23. Yes it is
50% of households earn less than $45,000 a year. Most two-person earner families do so because they have to. It is not the norm for both people to work outside the home, and most definitely not for 60+ hours a piece. If people want to do that, great. Don't have kids.
