Yeah, I've read DU through primaries and elections before.

But Nader? Geez get over it. You're feeding the ego you so dearly despise.

Same reason I never understood why so many republicans would give Clinton so much attention. It's a love to hate thing. I guess.

Isn't this more of a lounge topic anyway? It's not really about the avatar. Or the Primaries.

77. He's out bashing DNC candidates in the MSM, again.
I don't see anything wrong with DU getting a little ventilation.

Even if the man get's less than %1 nationally, he could have significant effect on who controls the White House in 2008. So yes, Nader and the Green Party have found themself in a free fire zone. I never bought the man's excuses for torpedoing Al Gore who didn't deserve Nader's crap. No difference between the two parties? Ralph, when was the last time you read a history book? I won't stand for it or remain silent and I think between 60 and 75% of DU feels the same way. I'm not trying to intimidate or insult you, but both the DU Rules and rational logic are pretty clear about third party candidates, so not only is the sentiment allowed but it is justified:

2. Who We Are: Democratic Underground is an online community for Democrats and other progressives. Members are expected to be generally supportive of progressive ideals, and to support Democratic candidates for political office. Democratic Underground is not affiliated with the Democratic Party, and comments posted here are not representative of the Democratic Party or its candidates.

Now admittedly I have a problem with Hillary Clinton being our nominee...hopefully that doesn't happen. It's really premature to answer "hypotheticals" since Hillary won't answer some essential ones, but my heart says write in Al Gore if HRC is the nominee.

35. Really..
I voted for Nader in 2000. My choices were a Lunatic and his Evil Handler, a guy too afraid to speak his mind because his handlers told him not to and his lunatic/evil running mate, or a huge pompous self-promoter ass and his has been running mate. I chose the pompous ass. For the last 7 years I have been blamed for the mess we are in because I voted my conscience. Funny thing is, the guy I didn't have voted for, admitted that he blew it big time, that he ran a crappy campaign by allowing his advisor's and handlers to control his message. But it's Ok, you need someone to take your anger out on, be my guest, I can't think of a better way to swing voters your way than to tell them to fuck off.

64. I don't support her in the Primary, but that's an unfair cheap shot to call her not a Democrat.
If she doesn't win the nomination and runs anyway, then maybe. Joe Lieberman is not a Democrat. Hillary Clinton IS a Democrat- you may not agree with her positions on some things, but she's part of the party. And you know what? If she gets the nomination, I'll support her. Grudgingly, perhaps, but I will do it. Because I, too, am a Democrat.

Ralph Nader, on the other hand, is an egotistical fuck who only gives a shit about Ralph Nader, and whatever "supporters" he has left need to get their heads out of their asses.

a fellow student at CSU during the 2000 campaign. She was ALL Nader. When I called her on it, her response was we could "deal with it" for 4 years. I have long since left FT. Collins; however, I truly hope she is choking on her words. He is one LOSER. I hold him accountable for much that has happened to this country since then. He has NO soul and, if he really is planning on running again, no conscience. May he rot with the rest of them.

42. It's really kinda sad
Edited on Thu Jun-21-07 10:10 PM by slick8790
that the new fad seems to be "gangbang nader". The man is totally irrelevant and washed up. I didn't vote in 2000 (wasn't old enough), but i wouldn't have voted for him anyway. These are people who voted their conscience and picked someone besides our guy. greens didn't owe us anything, and still don't. The election was lost when the supreme court made their ruling. not when nader chose to run.

Also, i don't buy the "if nader told voters to vote for gore in florida, he would have won!". Then why not say that about Pat Buchanan (got 17,484 votes in FL), or Harry Browne (got 16,415), or even this elusive James E. Harris (no idea who he is), that got 562 votes (which would have been enough to make a difference in the *official* count). If someone doesn't vote for you, it's because you didn't convince them. Plain and simple.

78. Nope. Sorry, Voters are Not Blameless.
In Fl they were told conflicting stories about whether Gore was winning or not and some may have decided to make a point by voting for Nader if and only if Gore was winning and I wonder if that was why the stories conflicted so much (so that they would favor a chance that these swing vote Gore/Nader voters would vote for Nader instead).

But they knew, they were told Not to Vote for Nader. What they possibly didn't understand is that a few hundred votes make can make a difference in an election. They f'd up. imo. :donut:

81. I don't buy it. Too many "ifs".
Fact is, it is the candidate and solely the candidate's job to convince the electorate. If they're making a point against Gore, then that's his problem that he didn't get them to vote for him.

And THEY WERE TOLD NOT TO VOTE FOR NADER? OH MY! Let me apologize for them for not bending over and doing what the media told them to :sarcasm: .

84. Fact is 100 votes can make a difference. Voters didn't understand that.
Some people will vote just to prove a point and are so naturally pissy and dead set on proving a point that they don't care if a Republican wins it would seem.

It is a voters fault if they voted just to prove a point and i g n o r e d the possibility that their vote might be 1 amongst 100 votes that allowed Bush to win. Because it was an inconvenient truth.

Is that not a possibility? Is it not possible that one's Nader vote could be amongst maybe 100 votes that were cast that would result in a Bush win?

Btw, about the Fl count being initially called for Gore, I'll bet other people in other states voted for Nader based on that.

Apparently Gore was running a campaign that appealed to most Americans (because he did win with Lieberman as his running mate) and did not appeal in every prissy little detail to the Naderites.

The US is not Europe. (I think some of our candidates would do better in Europe and Canada) And i wish that alot of things would work here but the majority of Dems are probably moderates & so on.

ignore them all because all are wrong, wrong, wrong. I'm guessing that's what you meant by the sarcasm that lots tend to think why should we listen to the media and pundits they don't know what they're talking about and all have an agenda to get rid of liberal thinkers. For the most part they're right, but some of it (media, pundits)is straight-on with the agenda of how to get a winning Democratic leader.

Ultimately, Harris and the Supreme Court had more to do with 2000 than Nader. 50,000 voters being purged and a stopped recount belong in the equation as well.

62. This kind of rhetoric makes me extremely uncomfortable
Defining what counts as dissent and what's a distraction gives off a bit too many McCarthy vibes for me.

Let him run if he wants, and let him say what he wants. If Democratic support is really so fragile that we can't compete against "a distraction", then we have much bigger problems than Ralph Nader.

63. to be clear: i do not think ANYONE should stop him from running or saying whatever BS he wants to
i only judge those who are irresponsible enough to vote for him.

65. I don't think it's irresponsible to vote your conscience
Unless, of course, you vote Republican.

A Nader candidacy will be a drop in the ocean compared to the GOP vote-stealing that the Dems still haven't addressed. And the GOP vote-stealing may be a drop in the bucket compared to the number of disgusted voters who just stay home, The true irresponsibility lies with the Dems for not acting to secure the vote and not speaking to the progressive majority in this country.

Remember Cindy Sheehan's "retirement" letter? Now imagine that times 20 million. I fear that's where we're headed if the Dems don't start delivering on the things we voted for in 2006.

67. i disagree with you. the whole idea that only naderites vote with their conscience is nonsensical
even republicans vote with their conscience. if i am free to judge them, i am free to judge naderites. i think their choice of vote is irresponsible, much in the way i think people who voted for bush just because he sounded like a 'war president' was irresponsible.

70. In This Context It Would Absolutely Be Irresponsible To Vote Your Conscience.
If doing so is technically facilitating the election of a far worse and dangerous candidate; in the republican, then I'm not sure how anyone could possibly argue that it's anything BUT irresponsible.

Someone lobbying for or supporting votes for Nader is doing the exact same thing as if they were seeking half votes for the republican candidate. So if someone with progressive ideals hit the streets and worked hard to get people to cast half their vote for the republican (if such a thing were physically possible), would you consider that to be responsible or would you consider it to be completely ass backwards in logic and a sign of significant ignorance and narrow mindedness?

72. The problem here is that we already know that message won't work
"Fuck Nader" might feel good, but it isn't going to convince anyone. I'd love to be able to say "Vote Democrat! We're Better!", but so far the Dems have given us very little to work with.

What's really irresponsible is to let the Dems get away with their usual politics of weakness. If we focus on making the Dems live up to their promises, nobody's going to worry about Nader in 2008.

75. Here's my problem with the whole "fuck nader" movement
Edited on Fri Jun-22-07 01:12 PM by jgraz

  1. We know now that a Nader candidacy has NEVER affected the outcome of an election

  2. Attacking candidates for just for running gives off some strong anti-democratic overtones

  3. If the Dems would just get their collective shit together, nobody would be paying attention to Nader

And finally:

If you want to make sure people pay attention to Ralph Nader's candidacy, the best way to do it is to hand out a bunch of "Fuck Nader" stickers. Hell, I bet Ralph's got a few thousand on order already.

Edit: "strong" is conventionally spelled with an 'r'

87. False, maybe, and false.
1) There is no way on god's green earth that Nader didn't affect Florida 2000. Even with all the ballot issues/voter fraud, Al Gore STILL would have won if not for Nader.

2) Maybe, but telling me I can't express my displeasure that Nader will run again is also fairly undemocratic.

3) Bullshit. Nader preys upon people that are fairly ignorant of the system and/or of politics in general. Saying that there's no difference between Democrats and Republicans is flatly false, and anyone with a shred of intelligence knows that.

I'll agree with your "and finally" comments however. We'd be far better off putting him where he belongs - in Lyndon LaRouche's category, forever to be ignored.

88. There Are Serious Flaws In Your 3 Points.
1. We know now that a Nader candidacy has NEVER affected the outcome of an election

2. Attacking candidates for just for running gives off some strong anti-democratic overtones

3. If the Dems would just get their collective shit together, nobody would be paying attention to
Nader

1. Though not the only cause, Nader was absolutely largely responsible as well for what happened in 2000 and all the monumental damage that's occurred since.

2. Fuck Nader

3. Fuck Nader

However, my top choice is a "Give 'em hell, Henry" avatar in honor of Mr. Waxman of California.
