"Discover Christian Schools" in a lather over public schools teaching about families

DiscoverChristianSchools.com Admonishes the New Jersey School District Responsible for Teaching Elementary Students About Gay and Lesbian-Parented Families
Contact: Deborah Hamilton, Hamilton Strategies, 610-454-1538, 215-815-7716

MEDIA ADVISORY, Feb. 2 /Christian Newswire/ -- DiscoverChristianSchools.com would like to alert parents across the country that certain public school districts are showing their students the film, "That's A Family". The film is a half-hour documentary that claims to help children understand the many different shapes of today's families – gay and lesbian parents, foster parents, grandparent-headed families, guardians, single parents, multi-racial families, families that speak different languages or have varying religious beliefs, adopted families and divorced parents.

The Evesham, NJ school district claims that the film defines guardian, race, gay, lesbian and divorce in a way that children can understand.

According to many news reports, parents were angry that their children were being taught about gay and lesbian-parented families, and also angry that they were not notified about the content of the film. Parents did receive a notice that simply stated the film would be shown but no clear information about the content of this film was given in the letter sent home to parents.

The video was produced specifically for elementary school students by Women's Education Media.

Harold Naylor, one of the founders of DiscoverChristianSchools.com states that, "We, too, believe that parents should be teaching their own children about sexuality and family issues, and that the school, whether public or private is transmitting a set of values that will (or will not) be consistent with the parents' view of the family – or the world in general.

"This is the reason that we encourage to parents to be totally involved with their child's education. That means that the parent will evaluate every aspect of the curriculum and content so that they know, before the crisis occurs, that there is objectionable material presented."

Naylor adds, "DiscoverChristianSchools.com is asking, once again, is THIS the kind of 'schooling' that we as parents want for our children? Wouldn't we want to have one less thing to worry about each day if we knew our children were at least safe in their morality and values at schools where these very issues are in concert with the worldview we hold as Christian parents?"

If you live in New Jersey, you can attend the school board meeting on February 13 at 8:00PM (25 South Maple Avenue, Marlton).

"We must make our voices heard and we must also strongly consider the alternatives to public education. Our children's futures depend on it," says Naylor.

1. You know, this is really sad...
If government can't rely on the conventional wisdom of science and psychology over parent-whim for curriculum what are we putting schools at the mercy of?

If we can't teach anything about a family unit to children of elementary school age that helps them understand these important modern ideas - particularly divorce and gay/lesbian families - then what kind of job are we doing preparing them for "reality"?

Divorce rates are skyrocketing across the nation and New Jersey, last I heard, is going to be another state with Gay Marriage open to it's citizens. Gay marriages, being the only group of marriages that lasts over an average of 7 years, are going to be around for a long time. What do these nut cases think they can do - whistle and hope it all goes away?

4. Gah!
It seems that these morons are advocating for bullying of children whose parents are Gay or Lesbian.
This is the right kind of thing to be showing children to prevent the bullying of those children, and speaking as someone who suffered from terrible bullying, if these people had any compassion, they wouldn't be so damn closed minded.

10. I'd bet they were showing that film specifically to prevent bullying.
And these Christian whackos would be first in line to complain if their kids were bullied for their "faith". But it's OK to bully gays and lesbians or children of gays and lesbians - they're evil. Pah. I'm hoping more and more people around the country are finding these "Christian" groups exposed for what they are - hate mongers.

9. Ramadan
One of the little girls in my class (same one in other post) was Muslim. She took off from school for Ramadan. When she came back, the teacher asked her to get up before the class to explain what Ramadan was, what they did, what they ate, etc. It was a perfect learning experience on cultural diversity for the other students who were mostly Christian and Jewish. Again, there were no complaints from any parents.

I am sure in far too many other school districts around the country, this teacher would have been blasted.

We have become a very intolerant nation, unfortunately, in too many ways.

6. These families are their neighbors
They want to put on blinders and live under rocks? Let them take their kids out of the public schools and put them in Christian :sarcasm: schools.

When I was a TA in a 1st grade public school several years ago, two of the kids in class had two Mommies. All the kids in this class and their parents were aware of this. No, it never raised any eyebrows, let alone any protests. The Moms came into class for meet the teacher night, birthday parties, storytelling, etc. In fact, the MAJORITY of the kids in this class were not being raised in "married, man and woman families". Their parents were divorced and they were being raised by single Moms, Dads, grandparents, or with step parents.

As that recent survey said, less than half of the adult population in this country is now married. I can see this for myself just in my own little corner of the world. These "Christian" people need to wake up and realize that American family has changed and all their protests is not going to change that fact.

7. Hear, hear!
In my daughter's pre-k class, there are 2 kids (that we know of) that are being raised by 2 moms. One of the moms in question is our soccer coach, too. No one bats an eyelash.

8. "Our children's futures depend on it," says Naylor.
As he votes Republican and they run roughshod over any future our children could hope for...Doesn't want to hear about Global Warming or run away deficits but a gay couple have a child and the world is coming to an end. These type people are just out and out crazy IMO...

14. Yes, because
teaching children that lesbian- and gay-parented families exist is automatically going to make the children turn into evil gays themselves. :sarcasm: Whatever happened to "Love thy neighbor?"
