Thanks to all of you who responded to my last e-mail asking for letters about what President Bush’s priorities should be. I appreciated your thoughtful opinions.

Now I have a more general request.

During summer vacation season, The Eagle tends to run a little low on letters to the editor. So if you have something you’re interested in writing about -- the casino vote, the war, stem cells or another topic -- now would be a good time.

Letters should be about 200 words, and you can e-mail them to me or to letters@wichitaeagle.com.

Thanks again for your help.

2. this is a good one
Don't be silent

Thomas Jefferson said, "We in America do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate."

Instead of sitting around complaining to your peers, why not let those who are supposed to be representing us in Washington, D.C., know what you think? Those people cannot know what their constituents want or don't want unless you tell them -- and they will listen to the majority because they want to keep their jobs.

If you want someone to be re-elected who does not conform to your way of thinking, just keep quiet. He will be returned to office again and again.

Make it your business to find out what your senators and representatives have voted for and against, and know which side of the fence they're on. Don't just vote them back into office because you think, "Well, he's been in for (x) number of years, so he must be doing a pretty good job." It ain't necessarily so, folks. You need to be paying attention now to what they're doing in Washington. I urge you to not be a part of the "silent majority" but a part of the majority who participate.
