'Mile-wide UFO' spotted by British airline pilot
22.06.07

One of the largest UFOs ever seen has been observed by the crew and passengers of an airliner over the Channel Islands.

An official air-miss report on the incident several weeks ago appears in Pilot magazine.

Aurigny Airlines captain Ray Bowyer, 50, flying close to Alderney first spotted the object, described as "a cigar-shaped brilliant white light".

Aurigny Airlines captain Ray Bowyer, 50, described what he thought to be a UFO as 'a cigar-shaped brilliant white light', similar to the image supplied by Dennis Plunket of the British Flying Saucer bureau

As the plane got closer the captain viewed it through binoculars and said: "It was a very sharp, thin yellow object with a green area.

3. more from the article

"The Civil Aviation Authority safety notice states that a Tri-Lander aircraft flying close to Alderney spotted the object.

"Certain parts of the report have not been published. I cannot say why," said a senior CAA source."

Oh I do hope its a real UFO and not some horrific military technology

54. I loved that book during early adolescence! The aliens weren't bad
The aliens had just come to midwife Earth's population into the next (non-physical) stage of being. During the transformation, the Earth itself "hatched" and the core was visible (if my other computer were online, I'd upload a picture I painted at about age 13 showing how I imagined that looking).

The parallels between the changes humanity was undergoing as a whole in the book and the changes my own brain was going through in real life (as hormones made me go from pretty much emotionally self-sufficient to feeling an intense need for peer acceptance and one-on-one bonding with a romantic partner) completely fascinated me, and I read that book over and over for a few years.

(As an aside: my pre-adolescent brain was much, MUCH easier to live with. If there were some way to go back to that essentially asocial, self-contained state, I would. It wasn't that I didn't *love* people, but I didn't *need* them, exactly.)

Perhaps the Overlords have finally arrived to make sure we don't anihilate ourselves before we can make the next evolutionary leap.

I was just explaining the premise of this book yesterday to my wife - how there's a "Hundredth monkey" thing going on right now, I told her about the babies being born that seemed autistic, but in fact their bodies were HERE and their Essence was Elsewhere, skipping across the surface of Mars, etc.

This is a MUST READ, it ain't "Stranger in a Strange Land", but it ain't that far off either :)

25. but would we even recognize the signs of "manufacture" from a species
so advanced it could travel here?

Just playing Devil's advocate, and I can see what you're saying, but I'm not sure a truly alien species would necessarily be recognizable to us, much less its use of technology. I guess what I am saying is, we should not anthropomorphize too much in that the conditions which lead to our development are most likely not the same conditions which may lead to some other form of life.

Then again, maybe I am wrong and all aliens look like humans. Or worse, look like Dubya!

31. True, but ships would still be made some how.
Ufo pictures however often look very much like light optical illusions you see with some regularity on a day to day basis, though much grander and larger in scale.
Aliens making ships that look like blobs of light? Personally I'd find a ship that wasteful energy wise unlikely. Or perhaps the ship is made of light, but I find that bordering on preposterous. Given the laws of physics seem to be universal, and that we are probably correct or mostly correct on the big points of physics, as space ship would still resemble a solid material container, even though it might be a mind numbingly bizarre one, as opposed to looking like a blobby sun-dog.

Still you never know.

60. "It was a very sharp, thin yellow object" I actually saw this in NY possibly
I was coming back from a Doctor's appointment recently over a fairly hilly road so your perspective on a part of the sky was fleeting and that's why I could only catch this thing for a couple seconds but it was enough. I hesitate to call this my first "official" UFO sighting in my life because it was so quick but it was quite striking. It was broad daylight and big puffy clouds covered some of the sky which gave me the perspective that it was in front of the clouds but still pretty far up there. It literally did look like "a very sharp, thin yellow object". Alost like a short piece of spaghetti on the sky, just sitting there. At least I think because as I said as I went around the curve I was on I lost that part of the sky in trees and hills. I desperately looked around as I rounded the curve, should have stopped, and I had lost it. I found the cloud patterns it was near before eventually but nothing. No contrails of any kind either. I've been a believer for a long time and I look for em but this was one of those. You notice it because you weren't looking kind of things. I wish they had stopped for a chat. B-)

61. I seriously doubt it's an alien
We would have seen them coming, absent of some sort of mythical (but entertaining) hyperdrive. Solar sail, nuclear fusion, antimatter... the energy required to slow down a spaceship from near-light speed would be visible for light-weeks or more. And the time to drag a ship down from those kind of velocities, even given plenty of energy, is measured in months.

I kinda like to think that if a giant spaceship capable of generating megawatts or gigawatts of energy was pointing that energy at us for the better part of a year, we'd, yanno, notice. Or something.

If you allow things that are currently theoretically impossible, things like hyperdrive, warp drive, superluminal drive, jump drive, Alderson drive, gravity polarizers, impulse drive, or whatever, then it all goes out the window and you can pretty much do what you want.

But much as I'd like to allow it, I can't. So... that means I don't know what it is, but I know what it isn't.

62. Dimensional travel might be the answer to why we can't see them coming
Who says they're from out there. They could be popping in from the universe that's contained in air molecules for all we know. That's what me and my "stoner scientist" friends came up with when we were 17 anyway.
