US May Reduce Forces in Iraq by Spring

Jun 22, 2007 2:38 PM (14 mins ago)
By PAULINE JELINEK, AP

WASHINGTON (Map, News) - The U.S. may be able to reduce combat forces in Iraq by next spring, if Iraq's own security forces continue to grow and improve, a senior American commander said Friday.

Lt. Gen. Raymond Odierno, the top day-to-day commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, did not predict any reductions in U.S. forces but said such redeployments may be feasible by spring. There are currently 156,000 U.S. troops in Iraq.

Speaking to reporters at the Pentagon from his headquarters outside Baghdad, Odierno gave an update on the U.S. offensives under way in Diyala province northeast of Baghdad and in areas south and west of the capital. He said U.S. and Iraqi troops have made important progress.

"I think if everything goes the way it's going now, there's a potential that by the spring we will be able to reduce forces, and Iraq security forces could take over," Odierno said. "It could happen sooner than that. I don't know."

He also cautioned that, because the insurgents in Iraq have proven so resilient and adaptive, making any prediction is risky. "There's so many things that could happen between now and then," he said, referring to next spring. (like escalating the forces)

Odierno also said it's too early to say how long the recent addition of almost 30,000 U.S. troops should be maintained. The overall U.S. commander in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus, is due to report to Washington in September on what the troop buildup is accomplishing, and he has said he intends also to recommend a way forward. (instead of a way out)

Odierno said the massive week-old series of operations in and around Baghdad would continue through the summer.

1. Cool.
Spring. That gives Blackwater plenty of time to re-inforce their troops to handle the reduction! Or, maybe they could hire some of the then recently discharged...

Awesome.

Hey, did you hear? Waxman sent a letter to Cheney.

I woke up in the land of OZ today.

2. that letter is in ADDITION to his other dogged efforts
which should be vigorously supported by those who claim to want to hold the administration accountable, not ridiculed like children in a junior high school lunchroom trying to impress their peers.

3. Excuse me?
I was not ridiculing, just laughing, actually rolling on the floor laughing. Which is exactly what I did when I read his letter. I expressed that in this post. It is my right to react any way I choose to react to the news of the day. I do not take well to being told how I should respond.

And I do not deserve to be called a child simply because I find it funny and I express that fact.

I will vigorusly support this party any way I want and EXPRESS that support any way I want....as I expect you to do.

I also expect you to treat me with respect, the same respect, I show you. You just got personal.

Waxman's letter gave him too much time in my opinion. Time to shred. Time to dodge. Time to evade. Time to come up with something else. I am sick and tired of giving these guys time. Time is UP. In my opinion.

READ: MY OPINION.

AG should be arrested and removed from the equation and the Land Of Cheney should be brought to account. Again, MY OPINION. Not yours. My opinion is my opinion and it is not for YOU to TELL me how to express it.

Peace.

Not ridicule. Laughter. That is all I got left.

You got to stop personally attacking people for having some fun.

6. Waxman. Right. They both send letters along with their dogged efforts
my mistake.

I'm really attacking your level of criticism (the 'laughter'). I have absolutely no way of knowing you personally. I'm beginning to get to know your persona here though.

my regards to you, saddlesore.

I really do think it is funny. I am laughing at the reality of the situation.

They send letters. BFEE ignores them. It has been going on for 5 years.

Funny. In a sick twisted OZ like way.

Regards.

Edit: Oh yea, it is not a persona. It is me only virtual...a little different granted, but same style basically.

I am a registered silly person. Just ask my son. If you are ever down in Houston, just give me a shout.
