Stephanie Miller is losing me with the Scooter Libby song parody.
Edited on Fri Jun-22-07 06:06 PM by 11 Bravo
I love Momma, but "Scooter Libby, Libby, Libby's going to jail, jail, jail ... He will take it, take it, take it in the tail, tail, tail" doesn't strike me as funny. I guess as jaded as I am, rape, gay or straight, still doesn't tickle my funny bone.

3. In comparison to those who were killed due in part to his actions, I think
folks should get over themselves.

It's called prioritizing.

7. So forcible sodomy should be tacked on to prison sentences?
I hope you never have your elbow forced up between your shoulder blades while being bent over a prison cot, but if you should be so fortunate, please get back to me about "prioritizing".

Again--it's about prioritizing.

And, in return, I hope you never get shot in the head, poisoned, garotted, or killed in any vile way that agents can be killed once their cover is blown.

4. I agree
That is very low-brow humor to be sure. The odd thing is that she knows it too, yet continues to play it.

However, she's not alone. Even on DU, virtually every post dealing with someone deemed "evil" going to prison includes at least one response with the perfunctory reference to them being sexually abused while in jail.

We're still firmly entrenched in the "lad culture" where it's considered hip to behave like an immature adolescent.

10. I don't think "hipness" or the "lad culture" has so much to do with it
Maybe a bit, but the real drivers are fear and retribution.

It's all wrapped up with revenge, and power.

When people who have power over others, and cause them pain, are brought low and punished, and forced to go to jail, there's that revenge aspect that kicks in for some people. The old "Don't drop the soap" jokes are almost obligato, thanks to films and series like OZ--and they're delivered with a "He got what he deserved" sense.

People who are angry and seek revenge like to imagine the person in a powerless situation where they are being abused and humiliated--the old "taste of your own medicine" sort of thing.

It's really rather tribal, or Biblical, eye for an eye, and all that.

People joke about it because they're afraid of it, really. Or they know that others are afraid of it. It's a rather dark form of humor. And while the Libbys of this world are pretty safe in the minimum security Club Feds, I guess that's not always true in some of these rougher prisons in the general population--if there's any truth to the popular culture tales, anyway. And that's what feeds the beast, those tales.

"lager lout!!!" Talk about a concise description....

I've lived/worked over there so I didn't even think about it when I read it, but yeah, it isn't something you hear every day in the US of A....

It's in the popular vernacular now, though, thanks to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lad_culture

Edited on Fri Jun-22-07 05:59 PM by IanDB1
Here's a clip of my five year-old daughter singing The Scooter Libby Song...

... during the "It's A Small World" ride at Disney World.

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v653/ian02302/?action=view¤t=0615071106.flv
(I love me some ironic juxtaposition!)

And no, she doesn't know what the song's actually about. But she does kind of understand who "Scoober Libby" is and what he did.

Considering that Scooter Libby's policy has led not just to mass murder, but to the rape and sodomizing of innocent men, women and children held in US custody... I see absolutely NOTHING wrong with celebrating Scooter's impending deflowering.

Steph & the Mooks are wickedly talented and are big fans of D.U. too.

BTW Scooter Libby helped sell us a war based on lies which has killed hundreds
of thousands along with selling out the cover of C.I.A. agent who was keeping us safe
from real WMDs and without a doubt many of her former secret contacts are dead
when their covers were blown by this group of thugs.

Libby, Rove, & Cheney are guilty of treason and I have no sympathy for them.
My best friend's son is a gunner on a humvee in Iraq right now .... Scooter needs
horse whipped and sent to jail.

Humorless stick up the butt liberals* .... sittting around a womyn's drumming circle
complaining about the little things and missing the big picture .... :puke:

20. Thank you for this post.
It's part of a pattern of lefty media people engaging in sexist bullshit. Olbermann, Stewart, Ed Schultz, her.

I used to love olbermann, but I left the KOEB when I realized how much misogynistic crap he does on almost a daily basis, and I no longer recommend him to others; I barely watch him anymore. Ed Schultz, I'm done with. I haven't heard Stephanie much, but this doesn't exactly endear her to me.

Racist jokes are racist.
Sexist jokes are sexist.
Homophobic jokes are homophobic.

I don't know why people get all pissed off when you state the obvious - that they are being racist/sexist/homophobic.

If all that was okay with me, I'd be a republican.

I sometimes think judges should have to actually say it when they are sentencing someone to sodomy. Because they bloody well know it, don't they?

If they actually handed down sentences of rape and sex slavery, as it is de facto, we couldn't very well go muddling in other countries on the grounds of "human rights."

You know?

Edited on Sun Jun-24-07 01:38 PM by LeftishBrit
No one's proposing banning anyone, but freedom of speech goes both ways, and people should have a right to make jokes that others might find offensive; and *also* have the right to say when they find a joke offensive or just plain not funny.

I haven't seen the sketch, so can't comment on it; but occasionally have been in situations where men were joking about women being raped, and blaming the women present for being humourless if they didn't find the jokes funny. I was in a sense more offended by our being dismissed as humourless for not finding the jokes funny, as though we had no right to our feelings, than by the jokes themselves.

Freedom of speech for all: the jokers and the offended!

her show. She is NOT funny. Her
shtick is NOT funny. Her songs
are NOT funny.

Sophomoric and dumb.

I MISS AL FRANKEN.

I listen to MUSIC or work until
Thom Hartman comes on.

46. Yeah, people either love it or they don't care for it.

I don't care for it. I know her politics are in the right place, and I know I am lucky to have Air America, but unless she is doing an interview I will change the station to just about ANYTHING else. Its just too much poo poo silly for me.

48. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time
It is hard time and that has it's own consequences that even go beyond what the guards see or do to deter rape, or any other crime being committed in prison...

How many of them turn their heads and don't give a flying f**k what is done as long as they don't kill or seriously injure the prisoner....

When I used to volunteer my time at the county jail here, one of the biggest complaints by the ladies is that the guards don't care. They treat them like animals and sub-humans... They think they all are liars, thieves, drug addicts and treat them as such....

It's a shame, but it is a fact, don't do the crime if you can't do the time.....

62. Republicans are supposed to be "tough on crime." Maybe they'll do something about prison rape...
as more and more of them end up wearing the orange jumpsuits.

55. It's a joke. You may believe it is in poor taste....
...but it was a funny jingle (for those of us who can tell the difference between humor and policy statements, at least).

59. You mean there is a kind of humor where people say things they don't actually believe?
I'm shocked!

You may have taken a step toward developing a stickupthebuttectomy procedure!

63. No one is objecting to humor
but can't liberals find a way to be funny without copying right wingers?

How about if she tries to be funny without going into the gutter?

66. So the issue is that the humor is not highbrow enough?
Believe it not, most democrats are just plain folks that can handle jokes and even potty humor.

Other things we can get offended about from Steph not taking the high road:

1) Doing the Darth Cheney thing during right wing world. Evil is not funny, so we shouldn't make light of it through jokes and satire.

2) The Village People theme and lispy voice of Crack White House Reporter Jeff Gannon. It encourages stereotypes.

3) The Xenophobic impressions of Jim Ward when he does over the top imitations of Brits, Germans, Irish people, or Kim Jong-iL.

4) All those mini-cover bands that she did. Is she making fun of people with a serious disease?

74. I love her MORE precisely because of it
And anytime she pisses off puritannical, humorless, sanctimonious people.
