1. Jeb: America's Next Bush -- His Florida Years and What They Mean for the Nation
Jeb: America's Next Bush -- His Florida Years and What They Mean for the Nation Author: S.V. Date

Saturday, June 23, at 8:00 AM

S.V. Date discusses "Jeb: America's Next Bush," his biography of former Florida governor Jeb Bush. Mr. Date believes that Jeb Bush will run for President. He argues that Jeb Bush is better suited for the office than his brother, President George W. Bush, because Jeb is a better speaker, a harder worker, and pays more attention to details.

S.V. Date covered former Florida governor Jeb Bush for eight years as Tallahassee bureau chief of the Palm Beach Post. He is the author of several books, including "Quiet Passion: A Biography of Senator Bob Graham," "Black Sunshine" and "Deep Water."

2. The Day The World Ended At Little Bighorn: A Lakota History
The Day The World Ended At Little Bighorn: A Lakota History
Author: Joseph Marshall III

Saturday, June 23, at 9:00 AM

The Battle at Little Bighorn marked the last stand of General George Custer, who lost a great number of men in his army in the two-day battle with the Lakotan tribe. The popular retelling of the event notes that Gen. Custer suffered from a combination of poor planning and underestimating the number of Lakota. Joseph Marshall III disputes this record and revisits the battle that the Lakotans called The Greasy Grass Fight. Mr. Mashall contends that Gen. Custer and his men were defeated by a highly skilled and better trained army. The author places the battle within the greater context of American westward expansion and Native American history.

Joseph Marshall III is the author of seven other books including "The Lakota Way: Stories and Lessons for Living" and "The Journey of Crazy Horse: A Lakota History." He was raised on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation and his first language is Lakota.

The Price of Liberty: Paying For America's Wars
Author: Robert Hormats

Saturday, June 23, at 12:00 PM

Robert Hormats looks at the history of how America has paid for its wars. The author relays the initial arguments of Alexander Hamilton who understood that the Revolutionary War would place the newly independent country in debt if not for the establishment of certain financial principles which have been replicated throughout the countries history. Mr. Hormats contends that the Bush administration's decision to borrow heavily and lower taxes deviates from a long standing American tradition which he argues could lead to a ruinous result. Robert Hormats is the vice chairman of Goldman Sachs International.

Robert Hormats is the vice chairman of Goldman Sachs International. He is a former member of the board of directors of the Council on Foreign Relations. Mr. Hormats is a frequent contributor to the The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, The New York Times, and Foreign Affairs.

51. Study--Sounded Really Interesting
This program was really interesting, despite a kind of annoying "joky-patter" approach by the two authors for this audience; I don't know if the book was written the same way--it doesn't really work. The topic and their treatment of it, regardless, was really great and sometimes very perceptive.

The two authors studied the best-seller lists for U.S. books over a period of about 16 years, and analyzed what was popular, and "why." The overarching theme of this talk was of how simplistic and formulaic the fiction and non-fiction books were, and what attitudes kept coming up. Some of the most exciting and perceptive comments were during these parts, when the authors lampooned the constant, never-deviating patterns of the writing (and marketing) of these books. The melding together of the self-help/diet/inspiration/business categories, to form a kind of catch-all "inspiration" "guru/solution" "make-the-most-of-your-life" approach; the fact that the "romance/self-help" books take so little account of the realities of daily real-world life, and are so stereotypically hyper-masculine and hyper-feminine. Romance non-fiction relies on the "advice" of "communication" to solve all; romance fiction relies on "passion" and "surrendering to true love," with the (heterosexual) couple being complete ("Venus/Mars") aliens to each other. There is no friendship, compatibility, or ordinary life in any of these books, on any level. It is, as a matter of fact, all escapism. Gender differences are not reconciled, they are painted over with sex-role-rigid fantasy.

I noticed, years ago, how fake and unhelpful popular "psychology" books are, with trying to solve your own problems. Anyone who suffers from any social fear or discomfort is treated as a "loser," and "you" are advised to "dump them"(when many of us ARE "them," of some sort or other); there is no sophistication at all to the "analysis," except the ubiquitous, annoying call for "self-esteem," even when that isn't the problem. The complicated mix that most people actually are, is lost to the simpleminded, and fake, "categories" of "personality types" far more "type-able" than they are in real life.

Part of the talk centered on the comic-book "good and evil" approach used even by current political "analysts" of society, and how the "other" is all evil, ("liberal/traitor/terrorist," etc.), and "our side" is all-good-intention. There is no intention whatsoever in the current books to try to understand, talk to, the other side--there is only an escapist reinforcement of "our" "rightness," read among ourselves. There were really good comments about how others who think differently, are now painted as "villians" for doing so, the cause of all the world's problems, "insane," etc., and that the evil in the world is just so different from ourselves, that it is all external, caused by "the other," not an endemic part of all of us. "Religion," (pseudo-religion) is packaged only as "how to get this or that by prayer," "they are wrong, we are good," "controlling your fate," and other marketing hooks, and almost never an actual treatment of the topic on an intellectual level.

Memiors and autobiographies that sell well were described as falling into a pattern nowadays of horror-tragedy, finally ending with an "inspirational uplifting" ending, that actually avoided the true reality of tragedy and suffering, but is more of a glib writing/marketing tactic. Near the end, during a question-and-answer, it came out that there are many fewer author names that show up on the best-seller lists since the mid-1990s, the same names selling over and over, and are actually fewer writing genres now, as the whole industry becomes more marketed and less actual publishing. There were many interesting and great points made during this program, much research, great comments, and the book seems really interesting, like it really gets at the problem of the current situation.

60. I can remember Al Gore talking about evil,
and his understanding of how it resides in all of us. More specifically he spoke of seeing the possibility for evil within himself.

I think that if one cannot recognize that in themselves, it's possible to be swayed by it. It can go unrecognized for what it is if we think we're not capable of it and it's only contained within the "other", or if the simple fact that we're all capable of it is resisted or denied.

Author: Bernard Goldberg
Watch now - http://www.booktv.org/program.aspx?ProgramId=8189&SectionName=&PlayMedia=No

Sunday, June 24, at 1:30 PM

Bernard Goldberg criticizes both liberals and conservatives in his book, "Crazies to the Left of Me, Wimps to the Right." The former CBS newsman portrays liberals as hostile to the military, Christianity and American values. Republicans, he says, don't stand up for their own principles, such as small government and opposition to racial preferences.

Bernard Goldberg spent twenty eight years as a reporter for CBS News. In 1996, while still at the network, he wrote an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal accusing broadcast news operations of having a liberal bias. Mr. Goldberg expanded on that theme in his 2001 book, "Bias." He is currently a sports reporter at HBO.
