Air Canada adds pets to no-fly list
Air Canada adds pets to no-fly list 21 Jun 2007

Air Canada has declared its aircraft no-fly zones for pets. As of next month, animals will no longer be allowed aboard any Air Canada flights.

Darren Jakubec's pet dog died of carbon monoxide poisoning while travelling in an Air Canada cargo hold. While the airline barred pets from aircraft cabins last September, the restriction now applies to the baggage compartment as well.

In a letter sent to the Canadian Transportation Agency on Wednesday, the national carrier said, "please be advised that Air Canada will cease the carriage of pets as checked luggage on domestic as well as international routes , as of July 15, 2007."

Air Canada said the decision was prompted by "record load factors" for the past three years, as well as new security requirements that are leading passengers to check more luggage.

1. For a minute I thought it was the Homeland Security Do not fly list.
You, beagle, take off your shoes! Where's your ID? No, you are suspicious, you can't fly!

I can see not wanting to be liable for pet deaths, but how are people supposed to get their pets around in places where only Air Canada flys, or is that not an issue? Ah, read article and they say fly them cargo.

8. I meant the article says pets must be shipped as cargo, perhaps by strictly cargoites?

they must have known there was carbon monoxide in the cabins back then.

6. we need an airline just for pet lovers!
I hate the idea of doggies and kitties in cargo compartments. The should be in the cabin with their humans.

7. Terrorist Muslim Dogs
:sarcasm:

This is that kind of overreaction, throw out the baby with the bath water. If something went wrong once, you can try to address it, but there are never any guarantees. Hell, the entire plane could crash, killing all the people on board, so why don't they just ban flying altogether?

10. Good
pets in cabins are irritating. People should try to clue in to the fact that no one else on earth gives a shit about their precious dog or cat accompanying them around the nation or world. Put the damn pet in a kennel or leave it with relatives (and pay them for looking after it).

11. They actually do make exceptions for some dogs.
Edited on Sat Jun-23-07 01:39 PM by Rosemary2205
A friend of mine took Air Canada after they stopped allowing pets in the cabin. She has a very expensive show dog and was going to a dog show in Canada. The dog had to be muzzled and papers had to be presented at the gate of the dog's health and proof he was entered in the dog show. She had to pay full fair for the seat next to her. It's my understanding they also make exceptions for service dogs with advance planning.

Now that they have decided not to carry pets in the cargo hold either that means no pets on flights period. No cargo hold is safe for pets and expecting an airline to be responsible for your little furball is just unreasonable. IMHO. While I am a pet lover and have a practical zoo at my house, IMHO it's just best to leave a pet at home when flying. Hire a pet sitter if you must. Many of them are highly qualified and will keep your home secure also. They are well worth the expense.
