6. 25 is a platoon; a Marine's perspective
75 is a short company.

Let me do some USMC math for the civilians here:

If we lose a platoon a week, and the surge lasts 8 months...

We will have lost the entire "surge" by the time it is over

I was fixing my battalion commander's computer when he got our Iraq deployment order. He laughed. Our battalion alone was tasked with occupying territory that by "textbook" definition should have taken a regiment to hold (and before people snort at "textbooks", when we Marines say "textbook" it's shorthand for "living oral tradition of Marines stretching back through the combat experience of 2 centuries"). Not to get tangential, but one of the most powerful and, for lack of a better word, holiest aspects of the Corps is handing down that tradition; I've learned from Vietnam vets, who learned from WWII vets, who learned from WWI vets, who learned from Spanish-American war vets, who learned from Civil War vets, who learned from 1812 vets, who learned from Revolutionary War vets -- so there are only 6 generations between me and the Marines who stormed the British holdings at New Providence in 1777. The Army has a Field Manual that allegedly addresses all aspects of land warfare down to the most minute detail. The Marines have "doctrine"; it's an unwritten living tradition passed from senior to junior Marines. That was specifically a reason I enlisted in the Marines as opposed to the Army.

Why are we losing a platoon a week?

This isn't Normandy. This isn't Ypres. This isn't Que Sanh. We're facing an inchoate and disguised enemy but we've done that before; we know how to deal with it (the Marines, at least, learned in the Philippines a century ago). It just takes three b's: boots, bullets, and beans. Get enough boots on the ground to hold every block of the territory, get enough bullets downrange to kill anyone shooting at you, and provide effective social services ("beans") to the civilian population who 99% of the time are almost as pissed off at the insurgents as you are.

I was just a corporal (a sergeant by the time I got out in '04) so I was neither trained in nor privy to the questions of grand strategy here. However, one lucky shell or suicide bomber can leave a corporal commanding a company (not to be morbid, but just think about that for a second), so I had to be trained in at least the basics of strategy. By time- and combat-tested tradition handed down to me, it would take 2 armies (roughly half a million troops, including support who always have the most difficult job in cantonment/occupation missions like this) to hold Iraq, probably more given the states it borders. That is three times the combat-ready personnel of the Marine Corps and nearly the entire combat-ready personnel of the Army. This ignores the fact that we have substantial commitments in Afghanistan, to say nothing of our obligations in Europe, Korea, Japan, and the rest of the world ("Hi, guys, I know we said we would guarantee your security so that you wouldn't have to build up modern armies, but we want to go attack one of the most powerful regional powers in the world now... see ya")

Running an empire is not easy. Clinton could do it because he knew the difference between rhetoric and truth, and between words and force, and he knew when to use both. But I don't see any leader with that kind of savvy coming down the pipe soon, sad to say....

Anyways, end of rant...
