*John Perkins on CSPAN2 now! 10pm - new book - Secret History of US Empire*
The Secret History of the American Empire

Author: John Perkins

Saturday, June 23, at 10:00 PM
Sunday, June 24, at 12:00 PM

John Perkins talks about his follow-up to his 2005 book, "Confessions of an Economic Hitman," at Barnes & Noble in New York City. In his new book, Mr. Perkins argues that the United States uses its foreign policy to further U.S. business interests around the globe, often to the detriment of poor countries.

John Perkins is the founder and chairman of Dream Change, a nonprofit organization that promotes sustainable development. He is a former international business consultant.

Do we have a unifying principle for societal change?

This should be interesting...

Edited on Sat Jun-23-07 09:15 PM by Gregorian
He's even bringing up how the US makes 30% of the world's pollution. It's a failure!

How did this happen. And how can we change it.

I've seen this guy talking before. Economic hitmen. That was on Linktv. It was very revealing.

If the world's population were reduced to 100, it would look something like this:

8. You can't imagine my disgust.
There aren't many who see what I see. I have reached a level beyond which I am afraid I cannot go. I have been wondering if one can die due to disgust.

This car society is disgusting in a way I cannot convey. Most people don't see it. One must have been born with the ability. And one must also be at the mercy of it, to get it's full effect. Ride a bike to work for a decade, and just see and feel it. It's violent. It's ugly. And that is only one facet of the society.

Right now I'm trying to find ways to transcend or eliminate the disgust. I'm finding that since the recent real estate invasion of the countrysides, there is nowhere to turn. Even with a million dollars I cannot find a place that is free of the visual and audible pollution. I know, poor pitiful rich me. Actually, that's not rich any more. Enough. I honestly don't know how to rid myself of this poisonous hatred. In fact I just emailed an irritated and angry email to a realtor who isn't able to get off his ass and just send me a map. I could go on for hours with this conversation. I could tell a hundred stories. And I doubt anyone would want to listen. So I'll shut up.

I want to go back. Not before novocaine. Not before penicillin. Just a slower way. And it isn't going to happen. Not soon. And not without great suffering. Argh!

10. If you buy land for a commune... I am so there...
Edited on Sat Jun-23-07 09:36 PM by Viva_La_Revolution
I just want a quiet, hard working, satisfying life.

It has to have internet access though.

I got rid of my car 5 years ago, because it was just so not necessary. Now my new boss is hinting that I need a vehicle if I want to lead a crew. I don't have the heart to tell him I will find a different line of work before I will chain myself to one of those things again.

edit: spelling

26. I just looked at property in Siletz today.
Edited on Sat Jun-23-07 10:13 PM by Gregorian
It's on a river. But really isolated. I didn't go there. Just by map and internet. It's rather hard to find anything these days. There was a farm in Beaver that I liked, but it appears to have sold this week. People are still buying land. Not houses in San Diego, but land is almost impossible to find. I had to say this because I see you're from the Portland area. I so much want to live just like we did up until only a few years ago. Silence and working on a farm. I just sold a place like that. It was once a beautiful place, but is now just a mess of logging noises. I couldn't stay. And I'm still deeply saddened by the loss. I know. Boo hoo. I've got it easy in some respects. I just wish I were blindly stupid like the drones who all go to work every day. I used to be one. I feel like The Prisoner. I've resigned. Now I don't fit in anywhere.

28. we will find our place, someday.
I've done a lot of work lately outside of the valley, like rural Yamhill and at the coast (Waldport). The drives have been beautiful, informative and disturbing. Going around a bend, lush forest lining both sides of the road... and you come upon a logged/raped mountain-side. Heartbreaking.

:toast: To simpler times!

9. He's optimistic that we can and do change the behavior of corporations.
And he's right. The corporations that resisted air bags. And now we have them.

This is why they depend upon the media to lie to us and keep us in the dark.

11. Damn - did you hear the Mitsubishi story? The exec who thanked the
Rainforest Action leader? The exec had always wanted to do the right thing but was afraid of losing his job and the pressure of Rainforest Action made his company set up a committee that led Mitsubishi to do the right thing. Wow.

23. That is wonderful inside information. Very telling.
All is not what meets the eyes.

When I heard him talking about that, I immediately thought of Cheney and Rove. The fear they send down the ranks. They have invisible pistols aimed at everyone in the administration. Rule by fear and force.

I too sae the bully beat up in elementary school. And it was sad to see him cry. But very revealing.

14. That was really weird!
I was watching John Perkins talking to an audience about his book. I read Confessions of an Economic Hitman last weekend & was looking forward to hearing him speak. He began talking about 9/11 & he was literally cut off mid-sentence. The screen went black and then to context saying that the views expressed did not reflect those of Cox Communications or that of their employees. Anybody else have this happen?

25. Really brave comment about Israel...
Some Arabs and Israelis believe that the nation of Israel was "created" post WWII and is being used as a base from which to control Middle East Oil.

Israel is, of course, there because Jews have lived there for over 5,000 years and I've long believed that modern Israel has been used and used and used terribly by the corporate elite who want control of the oil.

Americans are being used by the corporate elite -- military-industrial-congressional complex -- and Israelis are being used, too.

WE GOTTA GET THE TRUTH OUT THERE AND DAMNED FAST.

I set out to catch peacemaking stories and links from Israel. I started on a Friday. By Sunday, my Friday stories had been mostly scrubbed. It was a big eye opener that I've never been able to really communicate.
