Slain soldier lived American dream
Slain soldier lived American dream

HERALD NEWS

When the 14-hour-a-day menial job got to Spc. Farid Elazzouzi, he looked to the Army for a better opportunity at realizing the American dream.

The recent Paterson transplant was strong and fit. The military could help improve his English, Elazzouzi believed. A steady salary would benefit his family back in Oujda, Morocco...

1. Dying in Bush's hostile takeover of Iraq is now essential for the "American Dream"?
Propaganda is shit.

2. yeah, I thought that headline really sucked
it should have been "immigrant lived a life of quiet desperation, resorted to joining the army, got blown to shit"

3. I sent in a LTTE
"I found the headline “Slain soldier lived American dream” to be both offensive and ignorant. Which part of Spc. Farid Elazzouzi’s life did you consider to be “the American dream”? The part where he worked 14 hours a day at a menial job? The part where he felt enlisting in the military was his best chance of supporting his struggling family in Morocco? Or the part where he died fighting against people who attacked neither our country nor his? To characterize that as the American dream is shamefully nationalistic and militaristic."

4. good
I posted the article as-is without commenting on that, thought about just deleting the headline, but that would have violated DU rules.

I felt the content was useful for people to see - another example of parts of Americana with which many of us are not intimately familiar. And frankly, except for the headline, it is a decent article, telling it like it is, giving us a chance to think about this guy for a minute or two as he passes into obscurity. Oftentimes newspapers have someone other than the author write the headlines, and in this case I think that is probably what happened.
