2. Its not a complete list.

And please don't tell me you are one of these "lets cut their pay" people. Federal Employees are almost entirely white collar professionals and many have been in the Civil Service for over 15 years. Just because the Corporations treat people as commodities doesn't mean that the Government should follow suit.

5. Millions and millions of contractor employees are omitted.
For example, there are hundreds of thousands of de facto employees of the Department of Energy who are 100% involved in doing DoE functions but who, for the purposes of denying them civil service protections and federal employee benefits, are de jure employees of whichever federal contractor gets the cost-plus M&O (Management and Operations) contract for the particular operation bundled for such purposes. It should be noted that the taxpayers save NOTHING by denying the protections and benefits to the employess, since the privateering itself includes cost overheads that more than exceed the alleged savings.

7. The legacy of the Republican movement.
Edited on Sun Jun-24-07 12:37 PM by VTMechEngr
They hate federal employees, and have constantly pushed outsourcing down the Civil Services throats. And the political appointees who run the departments pursue it with glee.

Meanwhile, the career employees (who are apolitical in job performance) must struggle on.

15. Outsourcing started back in the 50s and has been supported heavily by both parties for years

20. The Department of Energy, founded in 1977, is out-sourcing on steroids.
It's over 95% contractor 'employees' iirc.

3. Wow. Comparison of local average salaries and the federal salaries is mind blowing

In a bunch of states, federal employees earn, on average, $26k more than those in the private sector. In no state does the private sector pay more on average than the fed.

4. Apples and oranges
The problem is your comparing White collar jobs to all jobs, Walmart and Corporate alike. That is not a true comparison. If you compared the professional salaries in the private sector to the professional salaries in the federal sector, you'd find the private is much higher.

9. Not a the private company where I work
Obviously, it's impossible to completely compare 'apples to apples', but I can come close. I work for a large insurance company that posts the salary range for all positions. The salaries listed for federal employees the Insurance Corp. are far higher than in the private sector in my county. My current salary is middle of the road at my company, yet it would lower than 80+% of the federal salaries listed. (And yes, I'm quite sure that my education and experience is on par with the federal employees.)

Maybe it depends on where you live, but those salaries are very high for Ohio.

Open up your locality and see what a GS 9 - 12 pays. That is the working level in most places. GS 13 and up is management. Many people have been in for 15+ years and are near the step 7 and so on.

10. Well, I'm not doing the comparing, the APS is.
In any case, most federal employees with whom I've come in contact are not professional. They are blue, pink and white collar, much like the people in my neighborhood. I'd be interested to see data that belies my own experience.

They have been outsourced. If someone is a "GS", they are part of the white collar workforce.

Also, notice how all the Private sector numbers on that chart seem to correspond so nicely to the Median Household incomes of states...

http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/income/income05/statemhi2.html

Makes one wonder.

Or not. I have followed this debate for years, and this is a tired old Libertarian argument to cut the pay of federal employees so they will quit and the government can be outsourced. It was based on Bullshit, and still is. Do a google search - This crap has been on rightwing rag sites since the early 1990s.

I imagine that's why that particular dataset is missing here.

12. Since I knew someone in
upper management of SSA I looked at it. No wonder he quit and went to another place after 20 plus years. He is making 3 times in the private sector at starting pay as he was at SSA after 20 years for a comparable job.

14. Some positions for the Federal government should be paid above average
Another issue to remember is that they try to keep things equal regardless of location. One position that I am thinking of is USDA inspectors. According to some people in private industry, the quality of USDA inspectors is suffering in some parts of the country because they do not pay competitively compared to private industry.

17. Wow I am stunned. I looked up my brother in law.
He is making just 2k less then me and I've been promoted twice and in the industry for 4 years longer then him. In fact it looks like he was actually kicking my ass in 2006 until I scratched and clawed my way to promotion.

Wow... I'm stunned, sure puts it in prospective when he bitched about money.
