Orange - The Shade of Impeachment
Author
Rita Sand
Date Created
24 Jun 2007

This work is in the public domain.

The World Can't Wait Coalition announced a campaign to put impeachment back on the legislative table at a town hall meeting on Thursday, June 21st in Chicago. Using the color of prison jumpsuits, terror warnings and a recent democratic movement, coalition members hope to convince millions to don orange scarves, t-shirts and ribbons to spread support for impeachment nationwide.
KINDLING AN ORANGE FLAME

Advocates for impeachment raised the democracy threat level to orange at last week's town hall meeting in Chicago, saying that if Bush administration officials are not held accountable for their crimes, future presidents of either party are likely to carry on, even increase executive lawlessness. Sponsored by the Chicago Chapter of The World Can't Wait Coalition, and endorsed by the Chicago Chapters of the National Lawyers Guild and Code Pink, the Northside Chapter of the Progressive Democrats of America as well as the Progressive Democrats of Illinois, this town hall meeting on impeachment held at De Paul University Law School was just one of three such meetings planned in the Chicago area in the next few weeks.

Just like the "Orange Revolution" that swept the Ukraine in 2004-2005, leaders of the campaign to put impeachment back on the table in the U.S. Congress have chosen the color orange to show support for House Resolution 333 introduced by Congressman Dennis Kucinich which calls for the impeachment of Vice President Richard Cheney. But he is not the only one on the orange radar. John Nichols, author of The Genius of Impeachment: The Founders' Cure for Royalism suggested other royal heads should roll including "King George" himself along with Attorney General, Alberto Gonzales and political advisor, Karl Rove.

In addition to Nichols, three other speakers made up the panel who presented reasons for impeachment as well as the nuts and bolts of carrying it out. David Swanson, co-founder of AfterDowningStreet.Org, urged the audience to lean on Representatives from Illinois to co-sign the Kucinich resolution and he challenged Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, the only co-signer so far from Illinois to lobby her state colleagues as well.

Larry Everest, author of Oil, Power and Empire: Iraq and the U.S. Global Agenda argued that impeachment may be the only way to stop the war in Iraq citing the recent supplemental funding bill for the war that the Democrats helped to pass. Everest asked, "Are we going to continue to play Charlie Brown to the Democrat's Lucy"…? I say it's time not to fall for this anymore." John Nichols answered the charge that it is too late to impeach with sobering statistics. He reminded the crowd that every 10 seconds an Iraqi is killed, every 10 hours a U.S. soldier is killed and every 10 days, we spend 2 billion dollars on this war.

Finally, Elaine Brower, a military mom whose son has served both in Iraq and Afghanistan said she has been arrested five times for demonstrating against the Bush administration but it hasn't stopped her drive to resist. She hands out flyers every day on her lunch hour, speaks out and, of course always wears some orange.

Impeachment play book:

- Urge your representative to support HR 333
- Urge the IL state legislature to support the joint resolution 125 calling for the impeachment of Bush.
- Bring a resolution for impeachment before your city council
- Tie and orange ribbon around the trees in your neighborhood.
- Write a letter to your local newspaper
- Set up a town hall meeting in your town
- Put a sign in your window
- Put a sign on your car
- Wear orange
- Pass the word

2. WCW wore orange to our last beach action. They were
the exclamation point. :)

I like this. Wonder if you can get arrested for tying ribbons around trees on Federal property. That's where Nancy's office is here. ..

12. We should also set specific dates to go into the streets
as one all across this country, all wearing orange and waving orange signs. With the Net, it would not be hard to coordinate such a movement. ANd we should continue to do it at intervals until we re heard.

I will go to the streets dressed in orange on any day that is designated as National Impeachment Orange Day.

18. Orange means lots of things to lots of political movements in history.
Edited on Mon Jun-25-07 10:14 AM by Hissyspit
Recently, there's the anti-disengagement movement in Israel, that is not the only political meaning of orange. Orange was used in Ukraine by pro-democracy groups, in Kuwait by pro-democracy reform groups and in Egypt by pro-democracy reform groups. I assume you are referring to the Orange Order/Union of Protestants in Ireland. No offense to the Irish, but I would argue that the dominant association for much of the world NOW is with the Ukraine revolution.

From Wikipedia:

- Orange was the rallying colour of the 2004–2005 Orange Revolution in Ukraine and has thus become a colour symbolising opposition to tyranny around the world.
- Orange also may sometimes be symbolic of the political concept of democratic socialism, as it is related to socialist red, but is not red.
- Orange is used as a rallying colour by Jewish settlers in the Gaza Strip who oppose the Gaza Pull-Out plan.
- Ulster Unionism is associated with orange, due to its protestant symbolism and connection to King William III

There are only six primary and secondary pigments. Doesn't leave a lot of choices, although you can add tints and shades. Black is pretty much out of it.

Edited on Mon Jun-25-07 10:25 AM by genie_weenie
associate Orange with pro-democracy in Kuwait? And while the Ukraine Orange Revolution is the most recent use and the midwest does have many Ukrainian immigrants, the city has a very large Irish contingent.

And while many Americans may be ignorant of the history of Orange, those who would be most active in this movement probably have some understanding of history and may be turned off by the use of Orange.

21. I don't know. The meeting was held in Chicago.
Maybe they should have gone/go with a symbolic pattern instead of a pure hue. I wasn't there so couldn't suggest it. Probably, none of this will get off the ground and nothing will get accomplished.

There aren't that many that will stand out and will be readily associated with the call for impreachment.

Who cares what it once stood for...orange, from this point on, will symbolize will of the people to rid itself of the bushits.

Orange you glad we can finally show our strength?

31. Sign me up, Hissy -
I can even wear a scarf under my helmet, along with an orange shirt under my jacket.

I wear an ITMFA (Impeach the Motherfuckers Already) button on every jacket I own. Hubby borrowed one to wear to work the other day - in a construction-supply trade - and every one who asked what it meant was told. And they ALL agreed. Who'd a thunk it? Construction workers in very, very RED Alaska?

Don't dare put anything on the vehicles though. Caught a couple of high-school kids defacing a Subaru with "Impeach" and "Gore is my President" bumperstickers in a parking lot the other day. Called the cops. They did NOTHING.

But the rest? Got it!!

same as orange. Even green party council person CAM GORDON said he wouldnt' bring up resolution for Impeachment to the Minneapolis city council because he said it would pass so why try.

It seems that when many people become voted in they lose their grassroots.
