This is what happens when we defund education - "Taco Bell High"
'Taco Bell High' or 'Wal-mart Public School' coming to Canada?
AFP
Published: Saturday June 23, 2007

Canadian students could soon be graduating from "Taco Bell High" or "Wal-Mart Public School" if trustees here go ahead with a scheme to sell school naming rights to corporations to raise extra funds.

The proposal has pitted members of the cash-strapped Ottawa-Carleton District School Board with public education advocacy groups who fear it would jeopardize universal education.

"No one wants to go to Taco Bell High," Ellen Dickson, chair of the Ottawa Carleton Assembly of School Councils, told the daily Ottawa Citizen.

But proponents say it would help eliminate growing budget deficits at many of Canada's school boards, hit by rising enrolment and cuts in provincial funding.

Maybe another way we can help recover funding is by offering to teach our young people the benefits of Wal-Mart in public school in exchange for Walton Family dollars. Sweet! It could be a required class in order to graduate!

1. How about taxing those obscene trust funds?
That would work, too.

3. Why do you hate the rich?
If you were a good 'merican, then you would understand that the best way to improve schools is to reduce their funding and ensure that rich kids get better public education than poor kids. :dunce:

16. I'm just a meanie.
Thus far, I see no need to fund guillotine building. Perhaps soon, however.

14. Seems extreme for 6.2 million...
Edited on Mon Jun-25-07 12:00 PM by MrPrax
Ottawa-Carleton District School Board has an annual budget of 595-million US

119 elementary schools
30 high schools

Number of students:
69,382

Wake County Public School System is the 21st largest school district in the US. They just negotiated their budget.

The Wake County Public Schools System had sought $305 million, while County Manager David Cooke had suggested giving the school system $294 million. The commissioners voted for $300 million.
http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/1509155/">WRAL - TV

150 public schools:
93 elementary (K-5),
28 middle (6-8),
22 high (9-12),
7 special/optional schools.

Number of students:
128,000

Almost twice as much to run a district that is almost half as small in student population?
I don't think funding in either places is equitable to students, taxpayers or even teachers.

I remember the thread we had last week about a very popular Canadian lube called "Jig-a-loo" --

did we ever decide? Were the Canadians were making fun of blacks or male prostitutes? :)
