Elevator Falls 26 Floors at Las Vegas Hotel
Holy cannoli!!!

=======

Three people are recovering after the elevator they were riding in malfunctioned and fell 26 floors.

It happened at the Fitzgeralds Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas. Safety mechanisms prevented the elevator from hitting the ground floor.

Nine people were in the elevator at the time as well as a cart full of luggage. Fire officials think the elevator may have been overloaded when the accident happened.

1. No way that elevator shouldn't have been able to handle that load.
Nine were in it and three are recovering? What about the other six???

17. Doesn't matter.. The safety brake should have kicked in the split-second it started falling
I smell a lawsuit due to a defective brake.

23. i bet they're not
this is really a low ball casino, there is nothing there to comp anyone like "a son of a gun" to begin with, it would be like getting comped to the motel 6

plus giving them anything would be akin to acknowledging guilt and i'm sure the lawyers will not allow this unless someone is concussed enough to sign their rights away for a free spin and a hotdog...

16. Holy crap ... that is my phobia (one of them)
I have a few irrational, though not excessive or debilitating, fears: bridges and tunnels are two of them--I get really nervous when stuck on or in one. Elevators falling is another, more occasional one. And I take an elevator to my apartment every day.

I always like to tell myself how silly these are: then something like this happens and I think, okay, I'm not that silly. I used to freak when stuck in traffic in the tunnels in Boston--a position somewhat vindicated when that woman was actually killed in one when the ceiling collapsed. Now my flashes about the elevator falling turn out to be not so far-fetched.

Imagine how I feel when the train stops on the elevated bridge over the river. I suppose that's next.

I'd better go find my smelling salts.

18. God, me too.
I always check elevators to see if there are bars in them to grasp if I fall.

My other one is having a truck with ladders or pipes or other heavy crap on it suddenly busting free. Mostly because it happened to me once, and I'm terrified that this time I won't be so lucky!

20. Twenty six floors and still alive
I'd call that a miracle, after watching the mythbusters episode about surviving an elevator crash it's a wonder they weren't scrapong them up and seperating the parts into body bags, when they get out of the hospital they'de better hit the tables.

22. well 3 of them are still alive of the 9 who were in the elevator at the time
the article explicitly says THREE are recovering

i dunno, doesn't sound real good to me, and the three "recovering" will likely have permanent damage, they may not even know the extent of the soft tissue damage because it "develops" like film and the pain is actually not as bad at the moment of impact as it could be weeks later...or for the rest of their lives

plus fitzgerald's doesn't have any tables worth "hitting," it's a preferentially shuffling (legal cheating) low rolling joint

all around no reason to feel "lucky" here

From this, I inferred that the others died, because it didn't state they walked off.

31. Update: " Three injured in downtown Las Vegas casino elevator plunge"
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Three people suffered minor injuries when an elevator descended rapidly and made a "hard landing" in Fitzgeralds casino-hotel in downtown Las Vegas on Sunday afternoon, a hotel spokeswoman said.

Nine people, one cart full of luggage and a bell man were in the elevator when it fell rapidly, but emergency brakes kept it from hitting the bottom of the elevator shaft, said vice president of marketing Teresa Malm.

"It was a hard landing but all the individuals exited the elevator of their own volition," (sic) Malm said.

Two adults and one child suffered minor orthopedic injuries and they were taken to a hospital to be treated, he said. The injured suffered from a hurt back, elbow and knee, Malm said.
