Lugar: U.S. Must Reduce Military Presence In Iraq
http://thinkprogress.org/2007/06/25/lugar-iraq-2/

In a major speech tonight on the Senate floor, Sen. Richard Lugar (R-IN) announced his support for an immediate and dramatic shift in Iraq policy. The top Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee called on President Bush “to downsize the U.S. military’s role in Iraq and place much more emphasis on diplomatic and economic options.”

“Our course in Iraq has lost contact with our vital national security interests in the Middle East and beyond,” Lugar said. “Our continuing absorption with military activities in Iraq is limiting our diplomatic assertiveness there and elsewhere in the world.”

Lugar warned that “persisting indefinitely” with President Bush’s escalation strategy “will delay policy adjustments that have a better chance of protecting our vital interests over the long term.” He specifically rejected claims that withdrawing U.S. forces will increase instability. Downsizing the U.S. military presence in Iraq would “strengthen our position in the Middle East, and reduce the prospect of terrorism, regional war, and other calamities,” Lugar said. Watch it:

6. This is an important event.
Lugar carries a lot of clout with Rethugs in Congress. His stance will bring other Rethugs to demand a Draw Down of US Troops in Iraq. The Rethugs need to stem the flow of US Troop blood before the 08' Elections. This does not mean an end of the US Occupation but I feel that it will mean that the US Govt. will try to keep US Troops deaths and injuries down after this Escalation has failed.

7. Naw. He was very harsh before the invasion about the absence
of post Saddam planning. Folks hailed his words - but he continued to vote lockstep with the white house. This is what he does. He *sounds* like a senior statesman, but he votes like a craven crony.

He's a total Zellout! About as big a BushCo enabler as you'll find in congress. Stands up and lies with the best of them knowing all the time that he's telling lie after lie. Even the "Good" GOPers, are disgusting, lying, pigs!
