I was going to try and be witty
but really, there's not much more you can do for a story like this:

Church bares porn problem
http://news.galvestondailynews.com/story.lasso?ewcd=c3a81a2241dd306f

The 25-foot inflatable blue elephant displayed outside the Baptist Student Center at The University of Texas Medical Branch was part of a Christian movement to confront pornography in America.

The balloon company was all out of penises?

According to XXXChurch.com, 47 percent of Christian families say porn is a problem in their home, and 40 million people look at Internet porn daily.

Conservative values, you really have to chuckle.

“We believe, especially in the church, that we have a responsibility to maintain high values and help families love each other,”

Porn helps them love long time

XXXChurch.com pastors also travel to churches across the country, prompting conversation in the church about the problem of pornography

You can have my porn when you pry my Kleenex from my cold dead hand.

2. Just build the church next to the strip joint.
Someplace in Tennessee. I'm thinking Caryville. Anyways, there's this strip joint that looks from the freeway to be at least as big as a Kmart. Right next door is a Perkins pancake house and a church with one of the biggest crosses I have ever seen.

6. What's with the elephant?
I don't get the elephant thing. Is it cause of the erect trunk? :) Is this a subtle reference to porn being the "elephant in the living room"?

Elephants themselves aren't exactly known as randy beasts--the mothers are loving and the kids stay with the mom a/o matriarch of their herd well into adolescense.

What an odd choice. If they wanted a real porn-related animal, they'd've bought a big inflatable gerbil.

9. What is it about Christianity that makes people
think they can change human nature?

"Porn is a problem in 47% of households."

What does that tell us? Well, in part, it tells us that it's NOT a problem in 53% of households. Anyone want to hazard a guess that this is because either (one) the spouse doesn't care or enjoys it too, or (two) the spouse doesn't know about it? I'd say the percentage of households where it doesn't exist at all is relatively small, but that's just a guess.

I'm reminded of a George Carlin joke. "Ever notice that the people who don't like porn are the people you wouldn't want to fuck anyway?"

This is actually another area where my experience on various authors loops with a host of romance, romantica (a trademark of the publisher Ellora's Cave, which combines elements of romance and "sizzling" erotic fiction), and erotica authors comes to the fore. This sort of stuff is just about the hottest (no pun intended) thing in literature right now, so much that it's starting to leak into the mainstream (Laurell K. Hamilton's books being a prime example).

Men tend to be more visually oriented, and more likely to seek out visual representations of sex and beauty. (Not to say that a lot of women don't like looking at naked or near-naked men. Spend a little time on a romance list and you learn that quick enough). But women, particularly literate ones, seem to prefer (or at least enjoy just as much) sexuality described in text. I know my wife and my ex, the mother of my kids, both liked reading sex stories an awful lot.

And I can think of several ostensibly "Christian" women who either write, read, and/or buy this sort of stuff on a regular basis.

So all I can say to this church is "good luck with that."

12. Jeez...don't the Baptists know anything?
It's common knowledge that if all society were armed we would be protected from the dangerous scourge of porno.

Damn, do we have to explain EVERYTHING to them?
